On Thursday last, the 12th, inst. at the home of Duncan Clark on the 7th, of Bentinck, John Redford, Sr. passed peacefully from this life into the larger life beyond. Mr. Redford was born in 1828 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, England, and was one of a large family, most of whom emigrated to Canada, settling in Bentinck. In 1852 he was married to Sarah Sherman, who pre-deceased him by 18 years. Two years following their marriage, they came to Canada, landing in the "muddy York," now the city of Toronto. After spending 12 years in and around Toronto and Hamilton, they moved with their family to the township of Bentinck, settling on lot No. 25 in the 5th concession, where the subject of this notice continued to reside until the death of his only son, George, in 1904. Being unable to manage the farm, he disposed of it, and since then he has made his home with his son-in-law, Duncan Clarke, where he died as above imitated. The funeral was held Sunday, the 15th, inst. with Rev. A. R. McDonald of Mulock in charge. The remains were laid to rest in the Durham Cemetery, by the side of his wife and their son George. The attendance was exceptionally large showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Of his family four daughters remain: Mrs. J. O'Neill of Pittston, Pa., Mrs. Duncan Clark and Mrs. McCallum of Bentinck, and Mrs. Wm. Turnbull of Dryden. All of whom, save the last named, were present at the burial, as was his daughter-in-law, Mrs. George Redford of Bethune, Sask. Of five brothers who left their native land and settled in this locality, only one now remains, William Redford of Lamlash. As a man John Redford was unassuming, industrious, honest and honorable, a true husband, a kind father, and an obliging neighbor. Thus, one by one, the early settlers of this community, the men and women who face the perils and hardships of pioneer life, are passing from us, until very few remain to tell the story of an age of heroism. They were a sturdy and courageous race. We know them for their worth and their achievements, and trust that their descendants will prove true to the inheritance which is now upon their hands.
