SUDDEN PASSING OF ALEX LONDRY
EX-MAYOR LONDRY PASSED AWAY
ON THURSDAY EVENING AFTER AN
EXTENDED ILLNESS
MEAFORD EXPRESS (Oct. 3, 1929) - The death of ex-mayor Alexander Londry occurred at the residence of his son, Mr. Melville Londry, Cook St., on Thursday evening and removes another of the native sons of this district. Born on the Gravel road two miles east of Meaford, a son of the late J.B. Londry, nearly 79 years ago, deceased was familiar with the early life of the community and took an active interest in its development and welfare for over half a century. He followed the butcher and meat business all his life and served the Meaford public with meat products during his time, establishing the present Londry meat market with Mr. Geo A. Tomlinson, of the town, some thirty years ago.
He was favorably known about town and deceased served as Town Councillor and was Mayor in 1917-18 and again served in such capacity in 1927. In religion he was a member of the Trinity United Church and was regular attendant and endeavored to carry out the Golden Rule. At times the editor of this paper could not always see eye to eye with him in his views but he was always willing and did shake hands to settle differences when he was in the wrong. This trait of character was always deeply admired in his public life and our dealings and opposition were therefore cordial and beneficial.
The late Mr. Londry was born in St. Vincent township near Meaford on the old Londry homestead and was the second youngest member of a family of sixteen sons and a daughter of Jean Baptiste Londry and Nancy Fligg. Of the family only three are now living, one brother, Joseph of Summit, N.J. and two sisters, Mrs. Rachael Doherty, Meaford, and Miss Lucinda Londry of Kansas City. The deceased was married 59 years ago to Eliza Davies of Owen Sound, who predeceased him eight months ago. He was practically a life-long resident of Meaford where he conducted a butcher business for over fifty years.
