WAS BORN IN MEAFORD
MISS ELIZA ELAEANOR LAYTON PASSED AWAY
AT COLLINGWOOD FRIDAY EVENING
MEAFORD EXPRES (1907) - A lady well and favourably known in Meaford, where she lived all her life, passed away at Collingwood on Friday evening in the person of Miss Eliza Eleanor Layton, eldest daughter of the late D.L. Layton, one of the first weakness of the heart. She was in the Collingwood Hospital for three weeks, where she received only temporary relief from her troubles. She then went to stay with an old friend, Miss Frame, a well known lady of that town, at whose home she died at the time stated above.
Miss Layton was born in a little frame house on the bay shore road, where her father lived for some time and which was destroyed by fire many years ago. During the time her father held the position of postmaster of Meaford she continued to act as his assistant, and on the occasion of his death in June,1895, received the appointment of postmistress in his stead, faithfully discharging the duties of the office up to the 1st of January last, when she tendered her resignation to the Postmaster General at Ottawa and was succeeded by the present postmaster, Dr. J.D. Hamill.
Miss Latyon was a devoted Christian lady ,being a member of the Disciple Church from her girlhood days. She was noted for many acts of charity and kindness, visiting the sick and afflicted and offering words of comfort and consolation to those who were troubled in body or mind or whose spirits were broken and cast down by the taking away of loved ones. She was a member of the Meaford Astronomical Society, taking great delight in hearing papers read on the physical properties of the sun, moon and stars as well as in the astronomical discoveries made from time to time.
The body was brought to Meaford for interment, and the funeral took place from the residence of Mrs. M.A. Trout, Trowbridge street, on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Vosbuich, of Collingwood, conducting an impressive service at the house. Miss Layton is survived by an only sister, Mrs. J.F. Frame, of Verden, Manitoba, and a nephew, Mr. D.L. Steele, of Meaford.
