SUN-TIMES (Dec. 1928) - A veteran journalist of this district, Mr. William Hungerford, of Meaford, passed away on Sunday morning at 4:30 o'clock after an illness of less than a week, and his death is widely mourned. He took ill with the flu early in the week, and on Friday night developed pneumonia, and from that time on little hope was held out for his recovery. Although everything possible was done for him he gradually became weaker till the end came. He was in his 69th year and had resided for 44 years in Meaford.
   Mr. Hungerford was one of the ablest newspapermen in the district and in spite of his years was active and keen in his work up till a week ago. Ever since the Daily Sun-Times was established in 1922, Mr. Hungerford represented this paper in Meaford and district, forwarding an interesting budget of news each day and in addition looking after the business interests of the paper in the eastern part of the county. He was efficient in his work and took pride in the accuracy of completeness of his reports. Both by the people of Meaford and The Sun-Times he will be very sorely missed.
   Born in Walsingham, Norfolk county, in March 1860, Mr. Hungerford received his early education there and became an apprentice to the printing trade with the late P.H. Stewart of Toronto. Later he held positions on newspapers in Barrie, St. Marys, Cookstown and Dresden. In 1888 Mr. Hungerford moved to Meaford to join the staff of the "Monitor", then published by the late Alex Sunter. A few years later he joined "The Mirror" as associate editor and remained with the paper during the lifetime of the late James Patterson, the early proprietor of that paper. Later he spent some time on The Express. In 1915 Mr. Hungerford came to Owen Sound to The Sun to take the place of the late Capt. J. Milton Dobie, when the latter went overseas. Later in 1919 he became editor of The Chatsworth News for a year; and afterwards took charge of The Sun-Times work at Meaford.
   Although he had few interests aside from his work and home, Mr. Hungerford took a keen interest in public affairs. In the course of his newspaper work he made a close study of municipal problems and was particularly well versed on questions of civic government. Every sound proposition for the betterment of the community found in Mr. Hungerford an ardent supporter. He was an member of the Meaford Baptist church and was faithful in the performance of his religious duties. In politics he had Conservative leaning. Mr. Hungerford had the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens, who recognized his long and useful public service as a journalist.
   In 1882, the late Mr. Hungerford was married to Minnie Manning of Cookstown, who predeceased him last March. One son, Mr. Norman Hungerford, of Meaford, as a result of injuries received in a motor car accident three months previous. Another son, Watson, died on December 29, 1921, as the .............. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Florence Marshall, of Detroit. Three brothers lost their lives in the American Civil War.
   The funeral will be held on New Year's Day from his late residence, to Meaford Cemetery. The service at 2:30 will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Tyler, of the Meaford Baptist church. To the bereaved relatives the management and staff of The Daily Sun-Times wish to express their most sincere sympathy.
