FIVE YEARS ILL
E.Y. GODFREY DIES
MEAFORD EXPRESS (1922) - The death of Mr. E.Y. Godfrey, took place at his late residence, Trowbridge Street, early on Saturday morning after a long and trying illness. Deceased, who was in his 75th year, had been a resident of this town for upward of forty years and was well and very favorably known and highly esteemed. Coming here with his family from Nobleton, the late Mr. Godfrey entered the grocery firm of Messrs. Godfrey & Cake, and later was a member of the firm of Messrs. Godfrey & Bailey. At the close of the partnership Mr. Godfrey continued business on his own account until some eleven years ago when he sold out to his son, R.S. Godfrey. Prior to his wife's death five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey made a trip to the West where he was stricken with illness and underwent an operation at the Regina General Hospital in the hope of regaining health. Since that time he has never been himself and during the past few years has been a constant care to his attendants and family.
Mr. Godfrey occupied the Mayor's chair and was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. For some twenty-five years he was Superintendent of the Methodist Church Sunday School and an ardent Church worker. He was charitably disposed and gave freely to every good cause. He is survived by three sons and three daughters: Dr. John Godfrey, Seattle, Wash.; Harvey, at Winnipeg; Stanley, of Meaford; Mrs. John Jay, Mrs. Thomas Walker and Mrs. Herbert McConnell, also of Meaford.
The funeral took place to Lakeview Cemetery on Monday afternoon, the Town Council and Oddfellows attending in a body. Services were conducted at the home by Rev. Mr. Stewart and Evangelist McPhee, and at the Methodist Church by Rev. Mr. Stewart and Rev. Thos. Snowden.
Pallbearers were close friends of the deceased as follows: Messrs. J.D. Hamill, H. Reid, Wm. Gardner, R.E. Main, Dr. Culbertson and O. Boden.
Mr. George Pringle, of Nobelton, a schoolmate and dear friend of Mr. Godfrey's was buried the same day at the age of 75 years. As young men both played in the Nobelton Citizens Band and were life-long friends.
