MR. WILLIAM COOK
DIES AT MEAFORD;
ILL SOME WEEKS
Had Been Prominent Citizen  
  of Town For Over 50 Years
MEAFORD EXPRESS (Nov. 7,1929) -- The death of an old and highly respected resident of Meaford, occurred Thursday morning at 4 o'clock in the person of Mr. Wm Cook, J.P. The deceased had been in failing health for over the past eight weeks, suffering from a series of paralytic strokes, which left him practically helpless.
   The late Mr. Cook, who was in his 74th year was born near London, Ont., on Dec. 19, 1855, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Cook. While quite young, he moved to Bradford with his parents and in 1878 came to Meaford, where he had been in business constantly for fifty-one years. The late Mr. Cook was engaged in the .......... business for a number of years. He served as a member of council.
   In 1881, the late Mr. Cook was married to Miss Alice Plunkett, who survives, with three daughters and one son. Mrs. E.H. Carnahan, of Meaford, Mrs. Douglas Torrie, of Orangeville, Mrs. Goldwin Wilson, of Dunnville, and Thos, Cook, of Meaford. Three sons died in infancy, one was drowned in 1916, and a fifth was killed in France in 1918.
   The deceased was a faithful member of the Loyal Orange Lodge, joining the L.O.L. 885 District, Bradford; County Simcoe, in 1877. He was transferred to the L.O.L. 984, Meaford, in 1883. In 1893 he was elected primary lodge treasurer; 1906, Wor. Master, 1888 District Master of District Lodge St. Vincent; County Master of County Lodge, in North Grey, in 1898-9-1900; Grand Lecturer M.W.; G.O.L. Of British America of London, in 1900 Dept. ..., Bros. Wm. Cook, T .Lowe, A. Carnahan, J. Muxlow, R. McGirr, A. Helstrop, L. Richmond, T. Heppenstall, W. Lang, and T. Male, made application to the Grand Black Chapter of Ireland for warrant of the Royal Black Knights of the camp of Israel to be encamped at Meaford. Sor. Kt. Cook was its first Wor. Preceptor. He was later selected as treasurer. For the past eighteen years the deceased had been Grand Treasurer of B.B.C. Of Ontario West.
   In 1926 the deceased, accompanied by Mrs. Cook attended the Triennial Orange Council, London, England, and visited the graveyards in France, where their son is buried.
   The funeral will take place from his late residence, Bridge Street, at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Interment at Lakeview Cemetery, Meaford.
