OWEN SOUND SUN -- Tragic in its suddenness, the death occurred in Waterloo, Ont, on Thursday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock of one of Owen Sound's best known citizens, Mr. Alexander John Chisholm. Apparently in good health during the day, Mr. Chisholm, was attending the annual meeting of the Mutual Life of Canada at the head office company. He was suddenly seized with a heart attack and died in the public lobby in a few minutes, despite immediate medical assistance. Mr. Chisholm was in his 72nd year.
   The news of Mr. Chisholm's death which reached Owen Sound about three o'clock was a severe shock to his many friends. He left Owen Sound last Saturday for Kitchener to attend the Municipal Life Convention this week, and had planned to return to Owen Sound Friday night. He arrived in Kitchener Monday morning and was the first of the out-of-town agents to arrive for the sessions. Speaking to other delegates Thursday morning he appeared to be in the best of health.

While the convention was in session Thursday afternoon, Mr. Chisholm apparently feeling ill left the conference room and went down the front stairway, evidently on the way to his hotel. On reaching the main lobby he collapsed. Dr. J.M. Livingston, who was in the building at the time, was summoned immediately, but Mr. Chisholm passed away several minutes later, although Dr. Livingston did everything possible for him. Father W.B. Mayer, of St. Louis parish, Waterloo, was called, but life was extinct upon his arrival.

The late A.J. Chisholm was a son of the late Hugh Chisholm, and early business man of Meaford. The deceased was born in Whitby, Ont. The family moving to Meaford when he was a lad. He was educated at Meaford Public School, afterwards attending St. Michael's College, Toronto. As a young man he entered business with his father in Meaford, and in 1889, came to Owen Sound where he started a dry goods business. In 1891 Mr. Chisholm entered newspaper work for the late Joseph Lang, founder of The Sun, shortly after the paper was started. When The Sun was taken over by the late C.J. Pratt, Mr. Chisholm continued as editor until about 1894. He then was appointed local agent of the Excelsior Life. In 1898 he became identified with the Mutual Life as their Owen Sound representative, and later took charge of Grey and Bruce for the company, and in this capacity built up a valuable connection throughout the two counties. Few men had as many close friends in the district as Mr. Chisholm and he was very successful in his business. In 1924 he was succeeded by Mr. H.A. Schondelmeyer, but continued with the company as a special agent.

In Mr. Chisholm's death the city loses a loyal and public spirited citizen who was keenly interested in the advancement of the city. He had many sterling qualities. Hundreds of persons have reason to remember him because of kindly act or a good turn. Mr. Chisholm was respected on all sides and many will mourn his passing.

Although not actively engaged in newspaper work for many years, Mr. Chisholm was always keenly interested in journalism.
   While in the city he was a daily visitor at the office of the Daily Sun-Times and took special pleasure in tipping off the editorial staff to a hot news break. When the new Duplex press was installed in The Sun-Times plant in 1927, to Mr. Chisholm fell the honor of pressing the button to put the machine in operation on its initial run. As late as Wednesday afternoon Mr. Chisholm visited the new plant of the Kitchener Record and was shown through the new building by the general manager, Mr. W.J. Motz.

The late Mr. Chisholm was a true sport and thoroughly enjoyed outdoor life. He was particularly fond of fishing and yachting. Ever since its organization Mr. Chisholm was a member of the Owen Sound Bowling Club and for many years was one of the best “leads” of the club. In his earlier years he was a crack cricket player. He thoroughly enjoyed the various sports in which he engaged.
   The deceased was a devout Roman Catholic and his life might well be taken as an example of practical Christianity. He is survived by a sister, Miss Annie Chisholm, Meaford; and a brother, Col. W.N. Chisholm, of Owen Sound, who is spending the winter at Bradenton, Florida. Mr. Chisholm was unmarried.
   The remains were taken to the Lippert and Hunter funeral parlors at Waterloo and will be brought to Owen Sound on the C.N.R. Train, services at ......remainder of article not readable.
