COL. CHISHOLM DIES
AT HIS FLORIDA HOME
WAS A FORMER RESIDENT OF MEAFORD -
LIVED IN OWEN SOUND MANY YEARS
MEAFORD EXPRESS - Many friends here learned with regret Wednesday morning of the death of Lieut.-Col. William Noble Chisholm, former collector of customs at Owen Sound and formerly of Meaford. He died in Florida. Besides his wife he is survived by one sister, Miss Annie Chisholm of Meaford.
The late Col. Chisholm was the son of the late Col. Hugh and Mrs. Chisholm of Meaford, coming to this place when just a small boy. He received his education here and entered a general store owned by his father where he remained up until the time he received the appointment of Collector of Customs at Owen Sound some forty years ago, since which time he made his residence there. He early in life showed an interest in military matters and in 1885 joined the Grey Battalion as a Lieutenant under Col. Cleland and was attached to No. 2 Company. On his removal to Owen Sound he was placed in command of No. 5 company and received rapid promotion until he became a Major and in 1913 was made Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment. The following year the great was broke out and Col. Chisholm took a very active and energetic part in the recruiting operations in Owen Sound and throughout Grey County. He was ordered by the late Sir Sam Hughes, then Minister of Militia, to recruit the 147th Grey Battalion, C.E.F. And achieved splendid success in this undertaking, this being on of the finest county regiments in Ontario. The command was finally taken over by Lieut. Col. G.F. McFarlane.
