MRS. ROBERT BARTLEY PASSES IN WIARTON
Early Pioneer of Bruce Peninsula Dies
WIARTON, July 20 --- Another of the early residents of the Bruce peninsula passed away on Sunday night last with the death of Mrs. Robert Bartley, whose death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Angus A. Rouse, Mary street, Wiarton, following a lingering illness. The deceased who before her marriage was Miss Susan Bestward, was born in the year 1862 in the township of Euphrasia, where she resided with her parents until her marriage to Mr. Robert Bartley, fifty-two years ago. Following their marriage they moved to the Bruce peninsula and settled in Lindsay township. They purchased a farm about nine miles north of Dyers Bay which at that time was almost a solid bush. Following the clearing of the land they farmed there until eight years ago when they retired and have since been living with different members of the family.
The late Mrs. Bartley was in early life a member of the Methodist church but since coming to Wiarton has attended the Bethel Mission. She was highly respected in the community in which she spent the greater part of her life and made many friends who will regret to learn of her passing. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her loss six sons, Robert, John, Albert, James, Alexander and Charles, all of whom are still residing in Lindsay township. Four daughters, Mrs. James McNair of Dyers Bay; Mrs. Angus Rouse and Mrs. Angus A. Rouse of Wiarton, and Mary of Toronto. One son and two daughters predeceased her several years ago. She is also survived by three brothers, Mr. William Bestward of Eastnor township; Mr. Charles Bestward of Miller Lake, and Mr. Samuel Bestward of Markdale; five sisters, Mrs. Kenneth McLay, of Lindsay township; Mrs. John McCollough of Eastnor township; Mrs. Hugh McArthur, of Cape Chin; Mrs. James Ward, of Lions Head and Mrs. John Rouse of Wiarton.
The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, July 19th, from the Bethel Mission where the service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. Waters, after which the remains were taken to Stokes Bay for interment.
