Aug. 16,p.1:James Giffen: On July 28th, there passed away on the 9th line of Sunnidale, a much respected resident in the person of Mr. James Giffen, in his 71st year. Mr. Giffen was born in Chinguacousy Township in March 1853. In 1882 he came to Sunnidale and purchased the farm he has lived on till his death. Deceased had been in failing health for some years, and although he passed away suddenly at the last, his death was not unexpected. In January, 1883, he married Miss Jane Carberry, of Chinguacousy, who died in March 1884. By this marriage a daughter (Mary ) was born. She died on Sept. 11th, 1900. In October 1885, he married Miss Mary Alice Schell, daughter of Mr. Nicholas Schell, who survives him, also a family of one daughter and six sons: Mrs. Walter Downey, Newman, Harry, Ellwood, Gordon, Kenneth and Fraser. Mr. Giffen was the eldest of a family of twelve, all of whom were present at the funeral, but one sister, Mrs. Shipley who is in the West. In politics Mr. Giffen was a Refomer. In religion a Presbyterian, being Elder in Edenvale Church since it was inaugurated. He was also Superintendent of the Sabbath School until his health gave out. In all his afflictions Mr. Giffen was very patient and his Christian character was manifested through it all. The deepest sympathy of the neighbors and friends is extended to Mrs. Giffen and family. The funeral took place on Monday, July 30th, interment being made in Stayner Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. A. Sheppard of Queensville, assisted by Rev. Godfrey Gray. His six sons acted as pallbearers. The friends attending from a distance were his five brothers: Will, of Brampton; Andrew and daughter, also of Brampton; Miller and wife, Inglewood; John and wife, Georgetown; also Peter, wife and family, of Sunnidale Corners; his sisters; Mrs. Jos. Gray, daughter and three sons; Mr. and Mrs. W. Wilkinson; Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Poyntz; Mr. and Mrs. John McMeekin; Mrs. Robt. Modeland. Other friends attending from a distance were Mrs. M. McEachern and son, Dr. Charles Brown, Toronto, Mr. Zeeneall and Mr. and Mrs. James Rupert and Mr. Isaac Downey, Barrie. - Stayner Sun.
