Brighton Ave. daughter of Samuel Jr. and Nellie Hurd (again, no year given) (The only W. Details of the accident are lacking as no report has yet been made to Agent Graney, Train 285 was a heavy freight and it struck the boy about a mile and a half west of the city near Flat Bottom bridge. The train was so heavy that it could not be backed to the city after the boy had been picked up, and he was carried on to Aurelius, Conductor Burke of No 285 knowing that he would meet No 280 east bound at that station. Word of the accident was sent to the city and when No 280 pulled into the Central station at 11:30 the ambulance was waiting and the unconscious boy was taken to the City hospital. He was unconscious when he was picked up, and he did not regain his senses, gradually growing weaker until his death. Coro er O'Neill was called by the hospital authorities in the hope that the boy could be able to make a statement before he died. The coroner found that the boy's right leg was broken below the knee, his skull was fractured, there were internal injuriesabout the chest and the left side of his face was slightly contused; as though he had struck on that side. The youngster was of light complexion, with light hair and blue eyes. There was nothing on the person to identify the boy; the only thing that was found being tickets that showed that he had purchased soda at Odell's drug store in Hackney during August and September. Mr. Odell was notified and his son went to the hospital but did not recognize the boy. The young fellow had the appearance of a country boy and was warmly dressed. He had on two pairs of trousers, the outer pair heavy weight. The inner ones dark blue or black in color and of light weight. His shirt was a black one with the white stripes in it running vertically, and his coat was of the pea jacket style of a dark blue. He had on a pair of home made mittens of cloth and his head was covered with a light weight blue flannel golf cap. He wore felt boots with rubber bottoms such as worn by the country people. He was not a large boy. The remains were removed to Mullen's undertaking rooms late this afternoon where they may be seen. BOY WAS WARR HURD Body of Victim of Yesterday's Fatality Identified - An Inquest On. The young lad who was fatally injured yesterday morning by a West bound freight train on the New York Central, a mile and a half West of Auburn, was identified yesterday afternoon about 4:30 at Hennessy's undertaking rooms, where his body had been taken from the hospital. His name was Warr Hurd, of the town of Aurelius. The identification of the body was brought about through the efforts of Coroner O'Neill and his father, who is acquainted in the vicinity where the accident occurred. In response to a request by telephone, the coroner's father and Elmer Webster, a justice of thepeace of the town of Aurelius, came to the undertaking rooms and identified the body as that of Warr Hurd. Word was immediately sent to the boy's father, Samuel Hurd, who is employed by City Scavenger Robert Hazlitt, and the father and brother of the deceased responded and completed the identification. Coroner O'Neill is making an investigation of the accident. By his direction Dr. W.H. Neville made a post mortem examinatin of the remains last evening and the examination of the engineer and fireman of the train will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. The post mortem disclosed the fact that there was a fracture of both bones of the right leg below theknee and an abrasion on the left leg the size of a dollar. There was a scalp wound on the right side of the head and on the left side of the head near the base of the brain an perforation of the skull large enough to admit of the insertion of the index finger. This last was the most serious wound discovered. Dr. Neville gave as his opinion that death resulted from shock caused by the injuries described above, and the the chief cause was the fracture at the base of the skull. The Hurd home was within 40 rods of the Central track, near enough to the city to permit the father to go daily to and from his work here. The boy was seen about 10:30 going through the lots from his home in the direction of the track and at a point where there was a crossing. It is surmised that he was bound for an auction which was to be held nearby. Whether he continued along the track or not cannot be determined until the evidence of the trainmen is obtained. The unfortunate boy was not quite 14 years of age, and his family have the sympathy of all in the shocking fatality that has fallon upon their home. ****************************************************** LETTER WRITTEN TO JANETTE BARBOUR HURD BY HER SISTER MARY ON AUGUST 14, 1913 AS FOUND IN THE HURD FAMILY BIBLE.
