Carleton County was established in 1798 and named in honour of Sir Guy Carleton.
From 1798-1824 this county was part of the Johnstown District. From 1824-1838 Bathurst District, and finally 1838-1849 the Dalhousie District. In 1849 the districts were abolished and counties took over.
In 1968 Carleton County was 'dissolved' in favour of a new municipality. And in 1969 became known as the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. On 1 Jan 2001 this changed and became the City of Ottawa
This map depicts the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. Prior to the creation of the municipality in 1969, Cumberland Township was part of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell
