GRADYCOUNTY

LOGAN M. LEWIS, son of Mr. and Mrs.Morgan Lewis, was born in Indiana, Sept. 28. 1891, and educated in Chickasha. Entered service Feb. 22, 1918, and trained at Newport, R. I., on U. S. S. San Diego. Went to France in June, 1918, as Fireman 2nd class. Discharged Aug. 8, 1919, at Dallas.

GEO. W. BUSBY, son of Mrs. Mary L. Jarvis, Naples, Okla., was born at Marietta, Okla.., Jan. 24, 1898, and educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered service March 3, 1918, and went to Fort Logan, where he died from pneumonia. Was buried at Marietta, Okla., April 12, 1918. Is resting with his father near his dear old home place.

ROBERT E. ALEXANDER, Private. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Alexander, Alex, Okla.; was born in Oklahoma, Nov. 15, 1891; educated in the Oklahoma schools; graduate in Law University of Oklahoma, Class of 1913; he comes from a long line of soldiers, his father, W. V. Alexander, was Captain and commanded a Company of Chickasaws and Choctaws in the Confederate Army. Robert E. Alexander entered the service in February, 1918, and received an intensive military education at Camp Travis, 358th Infantry, 90th Division; he embarked overseas in June, 1918, and landed in France; fought at St. MihieI, and was killed in action September 12, 1918, being struck with machine gun bullets. The last word received from him was a letter to his parents August 27, 1918. Another of those heroic patriots who answered the call of a stricken world and gave his life that mankind might live in peace and enjoy their Liberty. In the ages passed records of the world contain the deeds of many, but history's eternal pages will mark no greater deed than that of this hero and the thousands of his brothers in arms who made the supreme sacrifice that the world might be saved to Peace and Christianity.

ROY B. HUNT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hunt, Alex, Okla.. was born in Missouri, Jan. 11, 1891, and educated in Oklahoma.  Entered service September, 1917, and was with the Quartermasters Corps, as Second Cook.  Discharged January, 1919, at Ft. Monroe.

JOHN WILLIAM CALLAHAN, Wagoner, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Callahan, Tuttle, Okla., was born in Kentucky, April 8, 1895; educated in the schools of Oklahoma. He entered the service September 19, 1917, and received an intensive military training at Camp Travis, Company I, 357th Infantry, 90th Division; embarked overseas in June, 1918, landed in France and was assigned to Supply Company, 357th Infantry, October 1, 1918; was in the engagements of St. Mihiel, September 12-26, 1918; Meuse-Argonne, Oct. 10-Nov. 11; Purvenelle Sector, Sept. 17-Oct. 10, 1918, and others; promoted to Wagoner; gassed slightly; discharged at Camp Pike in June, 1919.

ORVILLE O. OLIVER, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Oliver, Tuttle, Okla., was born Feb. 9, 1895, in Illinois, and educated in Oklahoma schools. Entered service in May, 1918, and trained at Camp Logan. Received his discharge at Camp Pike, March, 1919.

TATE W. CHITWOOD, Private. Son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Chitwood, R. R. 3, Minco, Okla.; was born in Oklahoma, December 27, 1896; educated in the schools of Oklahoma; entered the service July 9, 1917, and received his military training at Camps Bowie and Ft. Sill; trained with Company F, 146th Infantry, 26th Division; embarked overseas in July, 1918, and landed in France and assigned to Headquarters Company, 167th Infantry, 42nd Division; fought in the battles at St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne, and was killed Oct. 16, 1918, in action while attacking a nest of machine guns. He lies in the American Cemetery No. 1232, Grave No. 85, Argonne. After arriving in France his parents received only one letter from him. He sleeps, this hero, in the Argonne, where, amidst the red carnage of war, he held high the standard of Liberty, and on that great altar gave up his life. The world cried out that it was faltering on the verge of destruction; this hero and the thousands of his brother soldiers answered the cry and saved mankind to Freedom and Christianity. History can record no greater deed. His name will endure forever.

LEONARD D. FRONEBERGER, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Froneberger, Minco, Okla., was born in Texas, May 4, 1892, and educated in Oklahoma schools. Entered service Sept. 20, 1917; trained with Co. I, 357th Inf., at Camp Travis. Sent to France, May, 1918, and transferred to Co. M, 112th Inf., 28th Div. Was at Meuse-Argonne and Thescourt Sector. Discharged at

FRED E. FRONEBERGER, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Froneberger, Minco, Okla., was born in Texas, May 20, 1894, and educated in Oklahoma. Entered service Sept. 20, 1917, and trained at Camp Travis. Went to France in May, 1918. with 1st Co. D. B., transferred to Co. M, 112th Inf., 28th Div. Was in 2nd Battle of Marne, Argonne Forrest. Wounded in left shoulder, returned to States and in hospital for ten months. Discharged August 22, 1919.

HARRY E. PHILLIPS, Private, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Phillips, R. F. D. 1, Amber, Okla., was born in Iowa, Aug. 20, 1894; educated in the schools of Oklahoma; entered the service Oct. 4, 1917, and received his military training at Canms Travis and Bowie, Company E, 111th Engineers; embarked for overseas in July and landed in France; took part in the engagements at St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Discharged June 20, 1919, at Camp Bowie.

CLARENCE D. FITCH, Sergeant, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fitch, R. F. D. No. 2, Amber, Okla., was born in Missouri, April 25, 1899; educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered service July 27, 1917; trained at FL Douglas, Company F, 20th Infantry, and Co. H, 70th Infantry; did not go overseas; promoted to Sergeant. Discharged at Camp Funston, Feb. 5, 1919.

MARK B. FITCH, Private, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fitch, R. F. D. No. 2, Amber, Oklahoma, was born in Missouri, January 28, 1896; educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered the service June 5, 1917, and received his military training at Leavenworth, Kansas, 7th Engineers, Co. B; embarked overseas March 28, 1918, and landed in France; fought at St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne. Discharged at Camp Pike, August 7, 1919.

JOHN F. FITCH, Sailor, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fitch, R. F. D. No. 2, Amber, Okla., was born in Missouri, July 25, 1897; educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered the service July 16, 1918, and received his Naval training at North Island and San Diego, Cal., D Battalion, Naval Training. Did not go oevrseas. Discharged Feb. 28, 1919.

STEPHEN E. AYERS, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Ayers, Amber, Okla., was born in Kansas, October 15, 1899, and educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered service October, 1917, and trained at the Great Lakes and Charleston, S. C.; was not assigned to a ship. Discharged at Charleston, June, 1919.

RUSSELL C. GRAY, Sergeant, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Gray, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Chickasha, Okla., Aug. 1, 1895; educated at Chickasha high school and State University; entered the service July 18, 1918, and received. his military education at Ft. Sill, Okla., Headquarters Company 127, F. A.; embarked overseas in September, 1918, landing in England and then in France; discharged at Camp Funston, January 25, 1919.

ARTHUR WILLIAM CRABTREE, Private, husband of Gussie F. Crabtree, son of Mrs. Annie Gilbreath, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma, October 31, 1893; was educated in the schools of Oklahoma; entered the service April 26, 1918, and received his military training at Camp Travis with Company L, 357th Infantry, 90th Division; embarked overseas in June, 1918, and landed in France; was in the engagements of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne. He was struck by a piece of flying sharpnel Nov. 10, 1918, and died on the way back to the hospital. Married to Gussie F. Daily, July 26, 1917. He answered the call of his country and gave his life for the great cause of Liberty. His name will endure forever,

JAMES B. SAMPSON, Private, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Sampson, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Texas, May 4, 1895; educated in the schools of Oklahoma; entered the service in June, 1918, and received his military training at Camp Cody, in Company D, 135th Infantry, 35th Division; embarked overseas in October, 1918, landing in France; promoted to 1st C. Private; in no engagements. Discharged at Camp Bowie, June 15, 1919.

JESSIE C. SAMPSON, Gunner, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Sampson, Chickasha, was born in Texas, April 23, 1897; educated in public schools and finshed in Watonga, Oklahoma, High School; entered the service in April, 1917, receiving his military training at Great Lakes Station, U. S. S. Tyler; embarked overseas in March, 1917, landing in Italy. Returning to this country his ship was only 36 hours out of port when it was torpedoed by a submarine. He was one of the only two mea lost. Another brave soul who made the supreme sacrifice in Liberty's name. Died May 2, 1918.

MARTIN L. GILBREATH, Private, son of G. W. and Annie Gilbreath, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma, Aug. 21, 1896; educated in the schools of Oklahoma; entered the service Aug. 30, 1918, and received his military training at Camp Pike, A. A. R. D.; did not go overseas, but ready and awaiting the summons, he remained on duty until Dec. 18, 1918, on which he received his discharge; he returned to civil life and later contracted pneumonia from which he died May 12, 1919. He is buried in the Cemetery at Chickasha, Oklahoma.

LONNIE A. HILL, Corporal.  Son of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hill, Chickasha, Oklahoma; was born in Washington County, Texas, February 14, 1894; educated at the Chickasha High School; entered the service August 4, 1917, and received his military training at Camp Bowie, Texas, in Company D, 142nd Infantry, 36th Division; embarked overseas in July, 1918, landing in France; cited for exceptional gallantry by General Pershing at St Etienne, October 8, 1918; also awarded Croix de Guerre; promoted to Corporal; killed in action instantly by bursting shrapnel, October 9, 1918. He was brave and gallant this hero, and offered his life on the altar of Liberty that a suffering world might be saved. There can be no greater sacrifice.

SAMUEL N. THOMPSON, Private. Son of Mrs. J. C. Hash, Chickasha, Okla.; was born in Farwell, Virginia, September 28, 1884; educated in the Missouri and Nebraska schools; entered the service in September, 1917, and received his military training at Ft. Logan and Leavenworth, Kan., Co. C, 5th Field Signal Battalion; embarked overseas in March, 1918, landing in France; killed in action at Chateau Thierry; the first Chickasha boy to die of wounds received in action; he now occupies Grave 63, Section X, Plat 2, American City, 1764 Balleau, Aisne, France. The world called for help to save it from destruction; he answered the cry, and sacrificed his life on the altar of Liberty. All the ages of history can contain no more heroic deed and no greater sacrifice. He died that a Christian world might live. His name will endure forever. Wounded June 15, died June 17, 1918.

WILLIAM L. LUSTER, son of Mrs. Anna Luster, Chickasha. was born in Springer, Okla., April 22, 1897, and educated in Oklahoma schools. Entered service May 22, 1918; trained at Ft. Logan and Winfield Scott, California, with Hdq. Co., 45th C. A. C. To France October, 1918; promoted to Sergeant. Discharged at Camp Funston, Feb. 27, 1919.

LEONARD L. BURTON, son of Mrs. M. C. Burton, Chickasha, was born in Oklahoma, May 20, 1896, and educated in the Oklahoma schools. Entered service June 12, 1917, and trained at Ft. Logan and Ft. Riley with an Ambulance Corps. Went to France in November. 1918. Was discharged Aug. 4, 1919.

HENRY H. WOOTTEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. Wootten, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma City, May 6, 1899, and educated in Chickasha and Kemper Military Academy. Entered service September, 1918, and trained at Camp Taylor. Discharged at Camp Taylor, in December, 1918.

WILLIAM EDWARD GILKEY, Private, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gilkey, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma, Nov. 17, 1894; educated at the Chickasha high school and University of Oklahoma at Norman; entered service July 18, 1918, and received his military training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma Headquarters Company, 127th F. A.; embarked overseas in September, 1918, to England and France; discharged at Camp Funston, January 25. 1919.

WILLIAM LOUIS IKARD, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. lkard, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Tennessee, April 1, 1895, and educated in Chickasha. Entered service Sept. 17, 1917, and trained at the 360th Field Hospital, Camp Travis. Went to France in June, 1918, and fought at St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Discharged at Camp Pike, June, 1919.

HARRISON IKARD, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Ikard, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma, April 27, 1897, and educated in Oklahoma and Kansas A. & M. Entered service April, 1918, in Reserve Medical Corps, remaining in Manhattan, Kan., to attend school until called. Was discharged in February, 1919, at Manhattan.

BOYD L. GILKEY, Private, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gilkey, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Oklahoma, March 17, 1899; educated at Chickasha high school, University of Oklahoma and University of Pennsylvania; entered the service in September, 1918, receiving his military training at Norman, Okla., S. A. T. C. Did not go overseas. Discharged December 20, 1918.

RICHARD K. WOOTTEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Wootten, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Mississippi, August 20, 1890, and educated in Chickasha and Kemper Military Academy. Entered service in August, 1917. Trained with 2nd 0. T. C., at San Antonio. Then sent to Ft. Sill as instructor. Discharged at Ft. Sill, March, 1919.

EVERETT G. DENHAM, son of Reverend and Mrs. William Denham, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Minnesota, April 4, 1896, and received his education at endall College, Oklahoma. He entered the service September 2, 1917, and underwent an intensive military training with the Marines at Paris Island, S. C.; qualified as expert rifleman.  Received his discharge at Quantico, Va., Sept. 16,

CHESTER D. DENHAM, son of Rev. and Mrs. Wm. Denham, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Missouri, Dec. 18, 1897, and educated in Missouri and Oklahoma schools. Entered service February 20, 1918, and was sent to Mather Field, California, for training with Military Aeronautic Air Service. Was discharged at Mather Field, Dec. 11, 1918.

ROSCOE M. EVANS, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Evans, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Missouri, September 22, 1889; educated in the schools of Chickasha. Entered the service August 8, 1918, and received his training at the Texas A. & M. and Ft. Bliss, Motor Transport Service No_ 533. Did not go overseas. Discharged at Ft. Sill, May 8, 1919.

FERREND J. REAGAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Reagan, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Arkansas, June 23, 1895, and educated in Oklahoma. Entered service June 5, 1918, and trained at Camp Cody with Co. D, 136th Infantry, 34th Division. Went to France. Oct. 13, 1918; was transferred to Co. L, 49th Inf., for discharge at Ft. Leavenworth, May 23, 1919.

JAS. E. WYATT, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Wyatt, born in Ninnekah, Okla., Aug. 19, 1895; educated in Oklahoma; entered service June, 1918; trained at Camp Cody; to France in September, 1918. Discharged in August, 1919.

ROBERT K. FIELDS, Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Fields, Chickasha, Okla., was born in Texas, November 11, 1895; educated in the schools of Oklahoma. He entered the service Feb. 6, 1917, and received his Naval training at Mare Island; assigned to the U. S. S. Arkansas, the ship that took over the flagship of the German navy at the surrender.

ALLEN J. SIMMONS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Simmons, Tuttle, Okla., born in Missouri, March 14, 1899; educated in Missouri; entered service March, 1916; trained on U. S. S. San Diego at San Francisco; to China in 1917. Discharged March 12, 1920, San Francisco.

ELMER V. NULL, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Null, Ninnekah, born in Texas, Aug. 26, 1886, educated there; entered service June 25, 1918; trained at Camp Cody; to France October, 1918, with Co. A, 330th Inf., 83rd Div. Discharged in July, 1919, at Camp Pike.

GEO. B. NULL, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Null, Ninnekah, born in Texas, Sept. 6, 1890, educated there; entered service June 25, 1918; trained at Camp Cody; to France October, 1918. Discharged June, 1919, at Camp Pike.

LEVI A. NULL, Ninnekah, born in Texas, Sept. 26, 1888, educated there; entered service June 25, 1918; trained at Camp Cody with 134th Inf.; to France in October, 1918. Discharged at Camp Pike in August, 1919.

HARRY O. McINISH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mcinish, Pocasset, born in Texas, Aug. 6, 1886, and educated in Texas. Entered service July 24, 1918; trained with 34th Baloon Co., Camp Travis; to France in September, 1918. Discharged at Ft. Russell, Wyo., April 4, 1919.

CLARENCE J. LANG, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lang, Chickasha, born in Texas, Oct. 2, 1897; educated in Oklahoma; entered service Sept. 5, 1918; transferred to 15, Sanitary Train. Discharged Jan. 29, 1919.

THOS. E. HUNTER, son of W. M. Hunter, Livingston, Tenn., born in Tennessee, Oct 26, 1896; educated there. Entered service September,1917; trained at Travis and Bowie, with 36th Div.; to France in July, 1918. Fought at St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Discharged at Camp Bowie in June, 1919.

CHALMERS A. DUKE, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Duke, Ninnekah, born in Georgia, Aug. 17, 1901; educated in Oklahoma. Entered service April, 1918; trained at Ft. Warden, Wash.; to France Aug. 15, 1918, with Bat. B, 69th C. A. C. Discharged at Camp Funston, March 12, 1919.

CPL. RAY F. CORBETT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. S. Corbett, Chickasha, born in Kansas, May 21, 1889; educated in Oklahoma and Columbia University, New York. Entered service May 10, 1917; trained at El Paso with 2nd Div. To France with them September, 1917. With Army of Occupation in Germany. Discharged Newport News, June, 1919.

S. V. CHITWOOD, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Chitwood, Alex, born in Oklahoma Feb. 27, 1893, and educated there. Entered service June 10, 1918; trained at Goat Island, Cal. Discharged at Goat Island in December, 1918.

GOULD BAILEY, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Bailey, Chickasha, was born in Oklahoma, Aug. 22, 1881; educated there and in Arkansas.  Entered service June 29, 1918; trained at Camp Funston with Field Remount Squad No. 320. Went to France September, 1918. Discharged June 14, 1919.

H. DUKE ARMSTRONG, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Armstrong, Chickasha, born in Georgia, August 16, 1896; educated in Chickasha. Entered service May, 1918; trained at Ft. Logan with Co. H., Ord. Dept. Discharged at Aberdeen Proving Grunds, March 26, 1919.

HENRY C. ARMSTRONG, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Armstrong, Chickasha. born in Sapulpa, Okla., Feb. 16, 1902; educated in Chickasha. Entered service Feb. 14, 1918; trained at Newport, R. L, on U. S. S., Sylvian Arrow. To France in August, 1918, on U. S. S. Huntin C. Discharged at Dallas, Texas, Sept. 9. 1919.
