During the battle on Sullivan's Island which began on June 28, 1776, brave patriots decided to keep their homes from the British.  Even though they were outnumbered, the patriots continued to fight and eventually made the British retreat after twelve hours of intense fighting.

This first decisive victory in the American Revolution would later inspire the movie, The Patriot.  Our military men became heroes--legends such as Swamp Fox, Francis Marion, emerged from the battered but still proud palmetto fort, now named for the brave commander Colonel William Moultrie.

Heroes played a pivotal part in the fort's role until World War II.  Such men as William T. Sherman, Edgar Allen Poe, and George C. Marshall, have been stationed there.  The Seminole Chief, Osceola, was detained and later buried there with full military honors.  Fort Sumter received cannon fire from the fort and the Hunley sank from its shore.

Now, 225 years after the Battle of Sullivan's Island, Fort Moultrie National Monument needs our help.  Proceeds would benefit renovation at the Visitor's Center, particularly towards a display about the American Revolution.  By supporting Fort Moultrie, the historical land can expand and gain the reorganization needed to show America what an amazing Treasure it is to be discovered.  To learn more about this treasure, go to www.nps.gov/fomo or www.nps.gov/revwar.
