Oklahoma Avenue Baptist Church
Oklahoma Avenue Baptist Church
was organized March 12, 1933, in a rescue mission at 126 S. Bell Street.
It was called the First Fundamentalist Baptist Church. It started with
fifty-three members. George Haich was the first pastor.
The first revival was preached
in 1933, soon after the church’s beginning. C. T. Perkins preached. The
results included three conversions, three rededications and an $18.00 offering.
On October 15, 1933, the property at 7th and Oklahoma was purchased for
$1500.00. An old house on the site was torn down, the ground cleared
and on May 20, 1934, the first worship service was held in the new building.
The name was changed to Oklahoma Avenue Baptist Church.
In 1944, a parsonage was
purchased. Orval See was pastor. He received a salary of $20.00 a week.
The parsonage was later torn down and another built in 1951.
In 1949, new pews were purchased.
Also, property behind the church was purchased. On June 30, 1955, a new
education building was dedicated with an all day service and dinner.
In 1964, the church expanded
the education building and remodeled the auditorium. John Fite was pastor.
He held the longest pastorate at Oklahoma Avenue serving from September,
1957 to March, 1967.
In 1978, the church purchased
six acres of land in north Shawnee with plans to relocate in the future.
The existing parsonage was sold and a new one built on the six acres. Larry
Norris and family were the first to make it their home.
In April, 1983, Oklahoma
Avenue celebrated its 50th anniversary.
In 1984, property north of
the church-was donated by the late Frances Kinkade to be used for parking.
In the 1990s Oklahoma Avenue
built a new building on their property on Bryant and the name was changed
to Heritage Church. The former church building at 7th and Oklahoma
was sold.
