Lawyer, Second Territorial Governor

Robert Martin was born in 1833, in Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania. He read law and began his practice in Ohio. He moved to Wichita, Kansas and then to Harrison, Oklahoma Territory in 1889. He anxiously worked in the adoption of the Organic Act. He moved to El Reno, where he was appointed Secretary of the Territory. He was appointed Governor of the Territory after the resignation of Governor Steele resigned in 1891. He remained in office until February 1, 1892 when Governor Seay was appointed, making his tenure only three months. He later moved to Guthrie where he was elected Mayor. He died there Marcy 2, 1897 and is buried in the Summit View Cemetery just northeast of Guthrie.
