Ernest W. Marland was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1874. He received a law degree from the University of Michigan in 1893. He went back to Pittsburgh where he began the practice of law, and there became interested in the oil production business. He moved to Oklahoma where he continued that interest, and became owner of the Marland Oil Company and remained it's president until it consolidated. He was elected to the United States Congress in 1932, as a democrat. He was inaugurated as Governor of the State of Oklahoma in 1935. He died at Ponca City, Oklahoma on October 3, 1941. He was a philanthropist and civic leader until the time of his death.
