Alfred Wade

Alfred Wade was born in Mississippi in 1811 and died at Wadesville near Talihina, March 13, 1878. His first wife was born 1820 and died 1876. Both are buried in the Wadesville Cemetery. His second wife was the daughter of Sarah and Horace Wood.

Governor Alfred Wade came to the Choctaw Nation on the Trail of Tears in 1832 and settled in the Wadeville community which now bears his name. Governor Wade was the son of John Wade and had five brothers.

Alfred Wade was elected governor of the Choctaw Nation in 1857 (under the Skullyville Constitution) and resigned Jan 12, 1858 with Tandy Walker, President of the senate assuming duties as governor.

Wade County (Wet Kaunti), Apuckshunnubbee District, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory was named for Alfred Wade. Wade County was in located in present day counties of Latimer, LeFlore and Pushmataha

Wadeville was a post office from November 19, 1877 to May 14, 1883 when it was discontinued and mail was sent to Mountain Fort, Arkansas. Alfred Wade is listed as the first Post Master.

The Epitaph on his tomb reads:

Hon. A. Wade, Ex-Governor of the Choctaw Nation. He emigrated to this country, finding it a rude wilderness, destitute of all that marks civilization. The deceased happily lived to see the efforts of his zeal, energy, and sole ambition crowned with success by supplying his people with schools, churches, and all that is desired by Christian men. With the blessings of a grateful people his eventful and benevolent career closed March 13, 1878 at the age of 68 years.
