Howard Baxter, 85, of Shady Point, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Talihina. He was born Aug. 4, 1917 at Spiro. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Southern France, Naples-Fogia, Rome-Arno Rhineland. His decorations included the American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, EAME Service Ribbon, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Bronze Arrowhead. 

Survivors include his wife Ruby Baxter of the home; two sons, Gary Baxter and wife Betty of Monroe, and Warner Baxter and wife Peggy of Poteau; one daughter, Euphia Gaye Beck and husband Steve of Poteau; one brother, Jack Baxter of Modesto, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Brandy Caldwell, Skip Baxter, Amber Evans, Dustin Beck, Dawn Beck, Tim Baxter and Cody Baxter; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones; and a host of beloved friends. 

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8 in Evans Chapel of Memories at Poteau with the Revs. Brian Smith and Harrell Bates officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery at Spiro under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau. 

Pallbearers will be J.L. Williams, Ken Hargis, Gary Duke, James E. Baxter, Ronnie Gene Baxter and Guthery Ritter.
