Ella Avery 

SPIRO — Ella Kathryn Avery, 78, of Spiro died Monday, April 3, 2000, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was the widow of James Avery and a retired school teacher. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Spiro, women’s missionary group, Spiro Historical Society and Spiro Alumni Association. She was an honorary member of the USS Farenholt, the ship on which her husband served during World War II. She was on the board of directors for Oklahoma Cattlewomen’s Association for the Southeast District. She was a member of the retired Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association and LeFlore County Teachers Association. 

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Spiro with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Panama under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Spiro. 

She is survived by three nieces, Sue Young and husband, Larry of Spiro, Carolyn Underwood and husband, Vernon of Wilburton, Okla., and Alyce Jayne Rogers and husband, Garland of Sallisaw. 

Pallbearers will be Tom Swafford, Delbert Warlick, Vernon and Mark Underwood, Garland Rogers and Steve Sebo. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Spiro First Baptist Church.
