t is hard to think of our small group of busy workers without thinking of Hoyt Duncan. Not only did he support us in our meetings and projects, but also he was the one we always depended on for technical expertise. When we needed new equipment, Hoyt was almost always the one who found it, purchased it and installed it for us, and then repaired it if it broke down. Our Latimer County website, which has received so many complimentary comments, was begun by Hoyt who maintained it until his death. More than once I have heard it described by folks as “the best county website we’ve found.” When Hoyt’s health continued to fail, he started teaching Raylene Magee some of the technical aspects of the website so that she could help. Now she is able to continue this important work. Hoyt was a dedicated genealogist who not only served as President of our group 1996-1998, but a number of years earlier he organized and served as President of a Kiamichi Valley group of genealogists. Although Hoyt was a brilliant, highly respected man in our community, I have never known anyone more unassuming than he was. He always seemed to be the same. When his son Mike spoke at his dad’s funeral service, I learned that not only did we in Latimer County Historical & Genealogical Society depend on Hoyt for a considerable amount of his expertise and time, but so did more than a few other groups. What a remarkable man! Hoyt was quiet, always busy. I believe that every one of us felt that he was our friend. I never heard an unkind word from him about anybody, but often heard him offer words of encouragement. He will be missed.

oyt lives forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Thousands who have never known him have visited this garden plot and reaped its bounty, and many more thousands will find it in hopes of finding their roots. Hoyt's desire to assist others in their search will always be admired. What a wonderful man to devote so much time and effort as a volunteer!

oyt was a special man in many ways, but his kindness to everyone set him apart. His legacy will be a gift that keeps on giving at the Methodist Church, the Latimer County Genealogical and Historical Society, Eastern Oklahoma State College, and in all the lives he touched. I like to think of him now as our guardian angel watching over us.

hat can you say about someone like Hoyt, being his cousin I grew up around him, he was always the kindest, caring, humble man, who was always the same. My Dad and Hoyt grew up together and my Dad told me Hoyt was always a wonderful person. I will always think of him when I do our family history, He will always be a big part of it. Thanks again for doing this.
