John Arnold Callaway
My Grandfather, John Arnold Callaway, was born in 1857 near Houston, Texas. As a young man he participated in several cattle drives from Texas to Kansas, reputedly on both the Chisholm and Great Western cattle trails. After his last drive he took a job on a ranch in Western Kansas for a short period of time. He left Kansas and took a job as a cowboy for the Quinlan Brothers on their cattle operation in the Cherokee strip. The Quinlan Brothers lease was located West of the Cimarron River and North of present day highway 412 in Woodward County. During their time in in the strip the Quinlans built some cattle loading pens next to the Santa Fe railroad which gave birth to the small town of Quinlan, Ok. John Callaway worked as a cowhand. for the Quinlans until they shut down their cattle operation. He married and homesteaded a place Northeast of Quinlan by the Cimarron River where he became a pillar of the rural community and lived out his life.
