Holiday wrecks take lives

There have been a number of accidents across the state at the start of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

In Sapulpa, a 55-year-old woman was killed and five other persons injured in a grinding rear-end collision Friday afternoon on Oklahoma 117, just east of Pioneer Road.

According to Sapulpa Police Officer Robert Hightower, Wanda June Clark, 55, 1530 W. Line, died when her 1989 Oldsmobile was struck in the rear by a 1989 Dodge driven by Donna Sue Ammons, 55, Tulsa.

Ammons was transported to St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa. Also injured in the accident were Mysty Lanning, Scotty McGill, Casey Deckard and Alexandrea Lanning. All are from Sapulpa and were occupants in Clark's vehicle.

There were transported to Bartlett Memorial Medical Center and none of the injuries appeared to be serious, according to Hightower.

Impact was so great that several of the victims needed rescue assistance from the Sapulpa Fire Department, which sent two units to the scene.

Hightower said that Clark most likely died from massive chest injuries sustained when the collision drove her into the steering column. All occupants, with the exception of Clark, were using their seat belts at the time of the accident, he said.

The accident tied up traffic on the state highway for about an hour or more. It was the first fatality accident of the Fourth of July holiday, for Creek County.

Across the state, one person was killed and one was injured early Friday in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 377 in Pottawatomie County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said Tracy E. Deardorff, 20, of McLoud died when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer rig as Deardorff attempted to pass another vehicle.

The driver of the rig, Roy E. Hare, 49, of Claremore, was hospitalized in good condition, the patrol said.

The patrol said Deardorff was not wearing a seat belt. Hare was wearing a seat belt.

The patrol said Robin Marie Becker, 22, of Santa Barbara, Calif, died Thursday when the car she was driving left Interstate 40 in Canadian County and struck a guardrail and overturned.

Troopers said she was wearing a seat belt.

The patrol also said 4-year-old Catrina J. Dowty died Friday afternoon when she was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck when it crashed and rolled over an Adair County road 10 miles west of Stilwell.
