Mose Cahwee, 82, of Sapulpa, died Sunday, January 21, 2001, at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Mr. Cahwee was born May 24, 1918 in Blue Bell and had lived in the Kellyville and Sapulpa area all his life.

He had worked for Liberty Glass Co. and had worked in the oil fields. He was married to Thelma Taylor in 1941 and was a member of the Picket Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mr. Cahwee was a World War II veteran who served with the 1st and 3rd Army Divisions. He took part is six major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He fought from Normandy to Germany and met with Russian soldiers at the end of the war. He spent 34 month in combat. He received tow Silver Stars, one Bronze Star with Combat V and other numerous commendations.

He also served his country during the Korean War.

He received the Medal of Jubilee for the Battle of Normandy.

Other awards and achievements include the Human Relations Award, World Children’s Fund, 12 years of service at United Methodist Men of Pickett Chapel, The Greatest Dad of Earth, All Tribes Community Church, Kellyville Alumnus of the Year, 14 years of service to the Sapulpa Indian Community, Indian Education Program of Sapulpa Public Schools and the Johnson O’Malley Certificate of Achievement.

As an elder of the Euchee Tribe, Mose was called upon many times by civic leaders in Sapulpa and the Sapulpa Historical Society. The most recent request was to name a foundation in downtown Sapulpa, and he had a street named to recognize the Euchee tribe.

He was instrumental in getting a monument put in front of Sapulpa High School recognizing the Euchee Tribe.

In Norman, his handprints are located on the Wall of the People of Oklahoma Native American Hand Print Walls.

These are only a few honors mentioned that Mose has accomplished.

His children are very proud of him as is their mother, who is a member of the Pawnee tribe, and who gave Mose support in his endeavors.

Mose is survived by his wife, Thelma, of the home; three sons, Phillip of Sapulpa, Dwayne of Tulsa, and Danny Cahwee of Sapulpa; four daughters, Georgina Rowe, Gwen Taylor, Debra Cahwee and Carol Barnett, all of Sapulpa; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, David Foster Cahwee of Sapulpa; a sister, Betty Jones of Kellyville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Wake services for Mr. Cahwee were held on January 22nd at the Smith-Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Alexander, Jimmy Alexander and John Fixico officiating.

Funeral services were held at 2pm on January 23rd, 2001, in the Pickett Chapel First Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Foote offificiating and the Rev Julienne Judd reading the obituary.

Serving as casketbearers will be Brent Cahwee, Brian Rowe, Kevin Rowe, Bill Mathews, Jeremy Barnett and Tike Chapman. Honorary bearers will be Larry Cahwee, Richard Grounds, E.R. Satpauhoodle, Bill Stinebuck, Christian Kramer, Niles Bosia, Rusty Lowe, Carl Beaston, Jerry Pinkston and Dennis Barnett.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
