IRON EYES CODY - 4 Jan 1999
Iron Eyes Cody, the "Crying Indian" whose tearful face in 1970s television commercial became a powerful symbol of the anti-littering campaign, died Monday. He was in his 80s or early 90s.
Cody died of natural causes at his home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, police spokesman Ed Funes said. Cody, whose acting credits date back to silent movies and include dozens of films and television shows, was best known for the ads from the group Keep America Beautiful that showed him shedding a single tear as he watched people litter.
He was born in Oklahoma, most likely in 1907. Cody followed his Cherokee Indian father, Thomas Long PLUME, as a performer in circuses and Wild West shows and made his first film appearance as an extra in the 1919 silent "Back to God's Country." Cody went on to appear in more than 80 films in Indian roles; often his character was listed as simply "Indian," "Indian Chief" or "Indian Joe." In one film, "Perils of Nyoka" in 1942, he had an uncredited role as "Arab." His other credits included "Sitting Bull" in 1954, "The Great Sioux Massacre  in 1965, "Nevada Smith" in 1966, "A Man Called Horse" in 1970, and "Ernest Goes to Camp" in 1987.
In television, he had guest appearances on "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide."

TARWATER, James A. July 17, 1924 - February 1, 1999
James Arlie "Sonny" TARWATER, 74 of Oakdale died at Modesto.
Mr. Tarwater was a native of Stapp, LeFlore Co., Oklahoma. He lived in Oakdale 44 years.
He is survived by his sisters, Velma Gardner and Clara Cole .
A graveside service was conducted on February 5th, at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.

BARCELLOS, Evon L. March 2, 1937 - February 3, 1999
Evon L. BARCELLOS, 61, of Los Banos, died Wednesday in Modesto.
Mrs. Barcellos was a native of Whitefield, Haskell Co.(formerly Oklahoma Co.)Oklahoma. She had lived in Los Banos since 1964.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Barcellos of Los Banos; son, Ricky Breshears; sister, Wanda Breshears; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private services have been held.

LICH, Martha J. February 13, 1923 - February 2, 1999
Martha Jane LICH, 75, of Gustine, died Tuesday at Newman.
Mrs. Lich was a native of  Tulsa, Tulsa Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Gustine 10 years.
She is survived by her children, Nancy Sullivan, Susan Johnson, and Donna Bridgette; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private services have been held.

HENDRICKS, Marsha Lea 23 March 1931 - 24 Jan 1999
Marsha Lea HENDRICKS, 67, died January 24, 1999 at Mt. Shasta.  Mrs. Hendricks was a resident of Mt. Shasta, California. She was born March 23, 1931, in Binger, Caddo Co. Oklahoma.  She moved to Mt. Shasta from Modesto eight years ago.
She was raised in Hughson, Califonia, and moved to Modesto after she married. She had one son, Michael, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Glenn; a granddaughter, Shannon Hendricks; nieces, Marjorie Herron, and Linda Salanti , and a nephew, Jerry Hendricks.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Praise Chapel, Modesto, California, on February 23, 1999, at 6:00 p.m.

OLLAR, Lorene L. July 31, 1928 - February 3, 1999
Lorene Linda OLLAR, 70, of Patterson, died Wednesday at Modesto.
Mrs. Ollar was a native of Heavener, LeFlore Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Patterson 55 years.
She is survived by her children, William Ollar, Mike Ollar, Fern Madnick, Judy Rowes, Pat Fields and Carolyn Hignite; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted on February 8, at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.

RUTH, Hattie A. February 24, 1913 - February 4, 1999
Hattie A. RUTH, 85, of Modesto, died Thursday.
Mrs. Ruth was a native of LeFlore Co. Oklahoma. She lived in Modesto 10 years and previously in Fresno from 1960 to 1988. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Barnes; sisters, Fannie Gates, Johnnie Howard and Rosie Buck; and seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted on February 8th at Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno.

ADAMS, Clarence E. April 18, 1935 - February 4, 1999
Clarence Edward, 63, of Manteca, died Thursday.
Mr. Adams was a native of Red Oak, Latimer Co., Oklahoma. He lived in Manteca 23 years.
He was an Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Adams; children, Michael Adams, Paula Adams and Lisa Beals, and Gregory Adams; mother, Dorothy Adams; sisters, Dorothy Dickerson and Laverne Whisman; and two grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted on Monday, February 8th, at P. L. Fry & Son Chapel, Manteca, with burial in Park View Cemetery, Manteca.

FARLEY, Jack G. December 22, 1938 - February 3, 1999
Jack Glen FARLEY, 60, of Modesto, died Wednesday.
Mr. Farley was a native of Broken Bow, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma. He had lived in Modesto since 1998.
He served in the Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Irene J. Bliss; children, Don Farley, Kelvin Farle,Bill Burke,John Burke, Ronald Burke, Margie Burke and Edward Frey; mother, Imogene Farle; brothers, Paul Farley and Michael Bill Farley; sisters, Nora Neves and Jeanette Clark; and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Roy was a native of Atoka, Atoka Co., Oklahoma. He lived in Modesto 51 years.
He is survived by his children, Carolyn Marcetti and Donna Jean Beene; brother, Kenneth Roy; sisters, Bonnie Mitchell and Nancy McDaniel; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ayres was a native of Tribbey, Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma. She had lived in Turlock since 1990 and previously in Delhi since 1978.
She is survived by her stepson, Ben Ayres; sisters, Jean Gatlin and Ila Munsterman; brothers, Gordon Ginn, Irvy Ginn , and Lawrence Ginn and several stepgrandchildren.

Mr. Dean was a native of Texas. He lived in Modesto 14 years. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Fay Dean; brothers, Eldon Dean and Bobby Dean of OKLAHOMA, Rayford Dean of Bakersfield and C. L. Dean and Ray Dean, both of Caruthers; and sister, Lois Brown of OKLAHOMA.

SHIPMAN, J. Sylvester December 3, 1929 - February 3, 1999
Jasper Sylvester "Vester" SHIPMAN, 69, of Lincoln, died Wednesday at Roseville.
Mr. Shipman was a native of Dogtown, Oklahoma. He lived in Lincoln 21 years and previously in Modesto 13 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Shipman of Lincoln; children, Eddie Shipman and Gail Fiascanaro, both of Lincoln; three sisters, TRELLIS PYLE, TRESSIE CAMPBELL AND DORETHA KISSEE, all of Modesto; and one grandson. A brother, Cleo Elmer Shipman, preceded him in death.

BURROW, Martha M. March 10, 1930 - February 9, 1999
Martha M. BURROW, 68, of Ceres, died Tuesday at Modesto.
Mrs. Burrow was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Ceres one year and previously lived in Empire 20 years.

Mrs. Kubik was a native of Tahlequah, Cherokee Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Manteca 20 years and previously lived in Stockton.
She is survived by her children, Michael Kubik and Deborah Finley-Uecker and Dave Garcia of OK; sisters, Ethel Romero and Dorothy Perez, both of  OK; and three grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Mrs. Walker was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Modesto 52 years.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Mrs. Ussery was a native of Albion,  Pushmataha Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Hughson 35 years.

BOONE, Drannon E. Sr. 1 January 1930 - 9 February 1999
Drannon "Dan" BOONE Sr., age 69, passed away February February 9th, at the home of his caregiver, Dorothy Crismon.
He was born in Morgan, Cleveland Co., Oklahoma, and moved to Buckeye, Arizona in 1943. He worked as a cowboy herding cattle, then he moved to Grayson, California in 1945, and to Modesto, in 1948.
Enlisting in the Navy. Dan and his brother, Paul Boone, served on the same ship, the USS HAMUL, during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Boone.
He is survived by his daughter, Tami Boone Quinones; his caregiver, Dorothy Crismon ; daughter-in-law Teresa Boone; brother, Paul Boone; son Drannon E. Boone Jr.; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13th, at Lakewood Funeral Home, Hughson, California.

Mrs. Langley was a native of McAlester, Pittsburg Co.,Oklahoma. She had lived in the Modesto area since 1940.

John Paul COUGHRAN, 75, of Manteca, died Thursday, Februrary 11th, at Turlock.
Mr. Coughran was a native of Checotah, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma.
He is survived by his children, Johnny Ray Coughran, Norman Eugene Coughran and Alan Dale Coughran; brother, Floyd Coughran; sisters, Lorene March of OK, Ruth Ayers and Ada Evans; and 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CRAWFORD, Noble J. 23 April 1922 - 13 February 1999
Noble J. CRAWFORD, 76, of Modesto, died Saturday, February 13th.
Mr. Crawford was a native of Keota, Cimarron Co., Oklahoma. He lived in Modesto 12 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Crawford; children, James L. Crawford, Larry D. Crawford, Terry L. Crawford, Dorothy J. Haynes, and Darlene Kindred; stepdaughter, Sandi Ziegenbein; sisters, Bertha Wood of OK, Bonnie Kensey OK, and Freda Coy; and 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

SEVERE, Rev. Kenneth D. 8 February 1935 - 9 February 1999
Rev. Kenneth Don SEVERE, 64, of Modesto, died Tuesday, February 9th.
Reverend Severe, a popular pastor and dedicated church member at Calvary Temple in Modesto, was born in OKLAHOMA, and lived in Modesto 35 years. He served as Christian education director, and as youth minister and children's minister. He led mission trips to Mexico, coordinated a street ministry at Del Rio Mobile Home Park, and served in prison ministry. He had a reputation for being compassionate. He was a talented musician who enjoyed singing in the country gospel group, "The Calvarymen." Reverend Severe retired in 1993 because of health problems. Both his legs were amputated because of diabetes; he also had suffered a stroke and heart attack.
He is survived by his wife Fay, his sons, Doug and Rick; his brother, Robert Severe; sisters, Barbara Harris and Glenda Wilatson; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral was conducted on Friday, February 12th at Calvary Temple, with burial at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.

BUNCH, Rev. John R. 28 June 1931 - 6 February 1999
Rev. John R. BUNCH, 67, of Lathrop, died Saturday, February 6th, at Fremont, California.
The Reverend Bunch was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Lathrop 25 years. He was a clergyman in the Abundant Life Church, and had retired.
He is survived by his children, Anthony Bunch, Donna Grisham and Pam Corsara, and John Bunch; sisters, Jackie Bunch and Lois French; and seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

Irene Marie SULLIVAN, 80, of Chowchilla, died Tuesday, February 9th, at Madera.
Mrs. Sullivan was a native of Johnston Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Chowchilla three years and previously lived in Merced 46 years.
She is survived by her children, Sue Alfonso, Cowanda Ann Hayes, Connie Marie Sullivan and Carrie Sullivan; sister, Lona Harper of OK; and 25 grandchildren, 34 great- grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Stella Lee "Cloice" JEREZ, 62, of Sacramento, died Sunday.
Mrs. Jerez was a native of Talequah, Cherokee Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Sacramento two years and previously lived in Jamestown and Groveland.
She is survived by her daughter, Brandy Jerez ; brother James Rose ; stepmother, Vira Lee Rose ; aunt and caregiver, Floy Welch; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Shaw was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Sonora 24 years.
She is survived by her husband, James Shaw ; daughter, Olivia Althouse; brothers, James Jackson and J. C. Jackson of ; sisters, Beatrice Gleason and Clara Wilkinson; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. DiBenedetti was a native of Poteau, LeFlore Co., Oklahoma. She lived in Turlock six years.

Mr. Brannon was a native of LOCUST GROVE, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Turlock the last couple of years, and previously had lived in Hughson since 1939.
He is survived by his children, Larry and Trudy; brother, Clifford, OK; sister, Maxine; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

OWEN "CLIFF" EMERY, 87, of Modesto, died Monday, March 22, at Modesto, California.
Mr. Emery was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Modesto nine years.
He is survived by his companion, Dorothy; daughter, Joyce Patricia; sister, Lorene ; and one grandchild.
A memorial service was conducted on March 27th at Centenary United Methodist Church.

JORDAN, BERTHA R. 26 September 1912 - 22 March 1999
BERTHA RUBY JORDAN, 86, of Modesto, died Monday, March 22, 1999.
Mrs. Jordan was a native of HEAVENER, OKLAHOMA. She had lived in Modesto  since 1937. She was a member of Airport Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by her children, Bob, David and Linda; brother, Charles ISON ; and eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted on Friday, April 2nd, at the Airport Assembly of God  Church, with burial at Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto.

PHIPPS, BOBBY L. 7 July 1931 - 21 March 1999
BOBBY L. PHIPPS, 67, of Modesto, died Sunday, March 21, at Modesto.
Mr. Phipps was a native of EDNA(?Enid), OKLAHOMA. He lived in Modesto 41 years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War; he had been a prisoner of war.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Stoney Lee and Holly Ann; stepdaughter, Audrey; mother, Nellie; brother, Ben and sister, Hazel.
A graveside service was conducted at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California on March 25, 1999.

MILES, EDNA L. 1 October 1927 - 19 March 1999
EDNA LUCILLE MILES, 71, of La Grange, died Friday, March 19, at Sonora, California.
Mrs. Miles was a native of POTEAU, OKLAHOMA. She lived in La Grange 52 years.
She is survived by her husband, Julius; children, Gary , Peggy, Judy , and Dale; mother, Ruth ; brother, Elmer; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service was conducted on Thursday, March 25th, at Oak Hill Chapel, Oak Hill Memorial Park, with burial at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.
