BOYDSTUN, BURBANK, CORDONNIERE, CUTTER, DICKEY, ETTER, GOODGER, HARRELL, TOBIAS
Jefferson County: Waurika News Democrat, Friday, June 19, 1953
Mrs. R.B. ETTER
Death came quietly Saturday afternoon
to Mrs. R.B. ETTER, a gallant, little white haired woman, who had been waiting
for His coming some time. Deprived of her eyesight several years ago she
had looked forward to the time "when we shall see each other face to face
and know as we are known; where there shall be no further walking in darkness
for there is no night."
Mrs. ETTER had been a patient
in an Enid hospital for some time having moved to that city from her old
home town here to be near her daughter, Mrs. J.B. CORDONNIERE and family.
Dr. CORDONNIERE being her son as well as physician.
She came back home Saturday night,
back to the town she had loved so long and so well, and stayed in the home
of a sister, Mrs. Wes BOYDSTUN, until time for farewell services. They were
conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock in her home church, The First Methodist,
where she had loved, prayed, and labored for many years.
The pastor, Rev. Addison CUTTER,
had charge of the services assisted by Rev. Stewart DICKEY. Interment was
in the family plot of the Waurika cemetery where she sleeps by her beloved
husband who preceded her in death several years. Eliza HARRELL, one of a
family of seven girls and one boy, was born in Mobile, Ala. When she was
ten years old, the family moved to Boyd, Texas, where she grew up. In 1902
she married R.B. ETTER at Decatur, Texas. They came to Waurika in 1907 where
he operated a cotton gin for several years and she was his bookkeeper. After
his death she engaged in business for herself and was successful until her
health failed. She was forced ;then to retire from public life but easily
kept in touch with outside activities, until she lost her eyesight. Even
then, with a surprising gallantry, she carried on. She kept a companion in
the beginning but after she learned her way around the house, after she had
access to the library of "Reading Books for the Blind", she was largely on
her own. She would sit enthralled to listen to scripture or some selections,
the best in prose and poetry; she kept abreast of the news by radio and took
a courageous stand against loneliness and loss of interest in outside affairs.
One of the brightest spots in Mrs. ETTER's life was always the daily visits
with her sister, Mrs. T.J. GOODGER.
After she lost her eyesight Mr.
GOODGER ran a line between the two houses and Mrs. ETTER hooked her cane
over this and continued to make daily trips to the GOODGER home, for much
happy companionship and visiting.
The ETTER home was blessed with
one daughter, Lavelle, Mrs. Byron CORDONNIERE, who was all that a daughter
should be in love, gentleness, and patience. Lavelle's husband was always
spoken of as "my son", and Lavelle's daughter, was her grandmother's pride
and joy in all the beauty of little girlhood and young
womanhood.
Other survivors of the immediate
family are Mrs. Vasti TOBIAS, Oklahoma City; Mrs Roy BURBANK, Los Angeles,
Calif.; Mrs. BOYDSTUN and Mrs GOODGER of this city. Mrs. ETTER is being missed
these days but her feet are set in shining rays of light and she sees clearly
each step of the way.
