Lee Pickering is Shot and Killed: Quarrel with Ross Kurtz Results
in Shooting
The Man Makes His Escape
Last evening at 7 0'clock LEE PICKERING, a well-known cattleman of this city and companion Ned WARREN, while out buying cattle, rode up to a house and confronted a Ross KURTZ about his part in cattle rustling. KURTZ went into his house and came back with a shotgun. Heated words were exchanged and as the two men turned to ride away, KURTZ fired both barrels of the gun, knocking PICKERING from the saddle. He died a few moments later. KURTZ escaped into the woods, and is still at large. Lee PICKERING was born at Saddlers Bend, Cooke Co.,Texas in 1877, removing to Oklahoma with his parents while he was yet a small boy. His father, John Daley PICKERING, and family live near Sonora, but a few miles away from the scene of the murder. Lee had been a resident of Okmulgee County for many years, having been in the cattle business. He is survived by his wife Maggie and six daughters.

M. H. THOMPSON, 52 year old, Beggs resident, died at 2 p.m. Friday
at the Ming - Vernon clinic after a short illness of pneumonia.
Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Billie THOMPSON, four sons, L. L.
THOMPSON; M. M. THOMPSON; and V. V. THOMPSON; all of
Beggs and Delbert THOMPSON, Clark, Neb; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond
HURD, Sunnyside, Wash.
Funeral arrangements have not been completeed. Burial will be under the direction
of Bingham Funeral Home, Beggs.

Martin COURIM Dies At Hospital
Martin H. Courim, 68, 1118 West 11th died yesterday at the city hospital
after an illness of one week. Mr. Courim was a retired Phillips employee.
He is survived by his wife;Hattie;one daughter Vivian of the home address;
two sons Lewis Courim,US Army;Walter Courim,Sand Springs;three sisters,Mrs.
Bessie Cooper Wichita Falls Texas;Mrs. Etta Hawkins,and Mrs.May Adams,bothof
Houston,two brothers,Jim Courim and Dell Courim also of Houston.
Funeral arrangments are pending word from the relatives, attendants of the
Buchanan Funeral Home said last night.

Dovie Mary (HUNT) PHILLIPS
Dovie Mary PHILLIPS was born February 22 1896 in Mounds, Okla and
departed this life July 23 ,1943 at the age of 47yrs.
She was converted and united with the Baptist Church at the age of 16 years,
and has lived an active christian life ever since. She helped organize and
build a church in Brownsboro, Texas. she has been active in churches wherever
she has gone.
She was married Jan 15 1926 to Loyd PHILLIPS to which union was born
one daughter, Margaret Lee. She moved about a year ago to Rawlings,
Wyoming. At the time of her death, she was visiting her Mother in Beggs,
Okla.
Besides her husband and daughter, she is survived by her mother Mrs M P HUNT
of Beggs, Four brothers, Grandy HUNT of Lordsburg, N.M., Ross HUNT
of Sapulpa, Okla, V.G. HUNT of Overton, Texas, Leslie HUNT
of Salem, Ill, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was buried in the Beggs Cemetery at Beggs, Okla.

William WRIGHT Dies At Home
William Newton WRIGHT, 1108 S. Sioux, died at home late Wednesday
night, at age 87.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice WRIGHT; four daughters all
of Tulsa and one daughter of Okmulgee; one son of Tulsa and one son of Caprock,
New Mexico and a sister, Mrs. Hattie WILLIS of Anson, Texas.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of Buchanan Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alice B. WRIGHT, 94 of 1108 So. Sioux, died Saturday morning
in a local hospital.
She was born January 2, 1869 in Burnet, Texas; she taught school a
total of 12 years in Burnet, Texas, Wister Junction, Sugar Loaf, OK
and Indian Territory before settling in Okmulgee in 1926. She was a member
of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William WRIGHT who died
September of 1955.
She is survived by four daughters and one son; 13 grandchildren; 22 great
grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren..
Services are pending with Buchanan Funeral Home.

Mrs Mary HUNT
Funeral services are pending with the Beggs schachle Funeral Home. for Mrs
Mary HUNT, an area resident for 70 years, who died Thursday morning
in an Okmulgee hospital.
She was born July 23 1869 in Denison Co Texas, and was the widow of James
HUNT who died in 1910.
Mrs HUNT was a member of the Beggs Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Ross of Beggs, and Lesley of Kermit, Texas and 19
grandchildren

Funeral services are pending with Buchanan Funeral Home for Salis S. TREAT,
member of the First Pentecostal Church of Morris who came to Okmulgee County
in 1912 and resided until his death.
Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Mattie TREAT of Morris, seven sons, Homer
TREAT, Cecil TREAT, Herman TREAT, Ralph TREAT, Jim TREAT, Howard TREAT,
, and Don TREAT; Also four daughters, Mrs. Pauline ADDINGTON, , Mrs. Ernestine

Rita WRIGHT JONES died in Odessa, Texas at age 69.
Services was Monday, Jan. 9, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev.
Jimmy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Funeral
arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral.
She was born Oct. 22, 1925, in Okmulgee, Okla., and married Harold JONES
on June 10, 1945, in Henryetta, Okmulgee Co., Okla. They moved to Odessa
in 1959. He preceded her in death. She is survived by a son and two daughters;
one sister and five grandchildren.

a former resident of Okmulgee, and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters; five grandchildren, and seven
great-grandchildren.

Betty W. SOUTHWICK. Funeral service were held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the Cantrell Ivory Chapel for Mrs. Betty W. SOUTHWICK, 50, Rev. Jerry Fielder, officiated. Interment was in the Morris cemetery under the direction of Davis-Cantrell Funeral Home. Mrs. SOUTHWICK died Saturday in an Oklahoma City nursing home following a lenghty illness. She had been a resident of Morris for all of her life and was a member of the Baptist Church.
Lillie Mae SHARP. Funeral services are pending with Davis-Cantrell Funeral Home for Mrs. Lillie Mae SHARP, 86, who died Monday in the Henryetta Hospital. She was born May 29, 1890 in Hot Springs, Ark. and came to Okmulgee from Iowa in 1932. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
George L.(Roy) JENKINS.. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Buchanan Funeral Home for George L. (Roy) JENKINS, 84, Rev. Bob Luttrell, of Oklahoma City officiated. Interment was in the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of Buchanan Funeral Home. Mr. JENKINS died Thursday in the local hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1892, in Galena, Kan and was a retired carpenter. He had been a resident of Okmulgee since 1929 and was a past Noble Grand of the Oddfellows.

Henry STIDMAN Henryetta - Funeral services are pending with Shurden Funeral Home for Henry STIDMAN, 74, who died Thursday in Tulsa hospital. He was a longtime Schulter resident.
Artie Hammer NYE Henryetta - Funeral services are pending with Shurden Funeral Home for Mrs. Artie Hammer NYE, 71. Mrs. NYEdied Thursday in the local hospital and was a longtime Henryetta resident.
Fannie Edine COFFRIN, 55, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hartshorne. Mrs. COFFRIN, who died Wednesday evening, was born August 11, 1922 at Hartshorne. She had lived in Okmulgee for 15 years and was employed by the Myers-Powell Clinic.
Tennie NIX Henryetta - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Shurden Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Tennie NIX. Rev. Grady McCullough will officiate. Interment will be in the Little cemetery under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home. Mrs. NIX died Tuesday night in a Tulsa hospital. She was a longtime Henryetta resident and was preceded in death by a son, ELMER WHITE, November 8, 1976 in Henryetta.
Hayden J. SCOTT Henryetta - Funeral services will be held Satureday at 1 p.m. at the Shurden Funeral Home Chapel for Hayden J. SCOTT, 64. Rev Alvin McConnell will officiate. Interment will be in the Weleetka cemetery under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home.

Elmo Lee GOINS Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Cantrell Ivory Chapel for Elmo Lee GOINS, 64. Rev. Gerald Kelley will officiate. Interment will be in the Okmulgee cemetery under the direction of Cantrell Funeral Home. Mr. GOINS, who died early Saturday morning, September 30, in a Tulsa hospital, was born December 19, 1913 in Okfuskee County. He was reared in Morris and graduated from Morris High School. He later moved to Okmulgee and is retired from the furniture business and car sales. He was a member of the Christian Church.

Interment will be in the Okmulgee cemetery under the direction of Buchanan-Wise-McClendon Funeral Home. Mr. GOINS died Wednesday , May 9, at the Okmulgee Memorial Hospital. He was born July 20, 1893 in Webb City, MO. He came to Okfuskee and married Hazel SOUTHWICK in 1912. He came to Okmulgee in 1921. He was a member of the First Christian Church. A son, Elmo GOINS, preceded him in death in 1978.
Goldie K. EDMOUNDSON Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the McCrary-Edwards-Cain Funeral Home in Winnsboro, TX for Mrs. Goldie E. EDMOUNDSON. Rev. Ira Waddell will officiate. Graveside servises will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Okemah cemetery under the direction of McCrary-Edwards-Cain Funeral Home. Mrs. EDMOUNDSON, a former Okemah resident, died Tuesday in a Winnsboro hospital following a lengthy illness. She had lived in Texas for nine years.
Steven MONANWEE Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Cantrell Ivory Chapel for Steven Chuck MONANWEE, 47. Interment will be in the Okmulgee Indian Baptist Church cemetery under the direction of Cantrell Funeral Home. Mr. MONANWEE died Wednesday at the Okmulgee Memorial Hospital. He was born February 24, 1932 at Preston and had lived most of his life in the Okmulgee area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict.

Interment will be in the Okmulgee Cemetery under direction of the Cantrell Funeral Home. Mrs. GOINS, who died Friday , March 19, in Chickasha, was born May 25, 1915 in Oklahoma City. She had been a resident of Okmulgee since she was a child and was a retired employee of the State Department of Human Services. She was a member of the First United-Methodist Church.
Martha MORGAN Funeral services for Mrs. Martha MORGAN, 67, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 23 at the Big Cussetah Indian Church. Rev. Willie Gooden will officiate assisted by Rev Sam Haney. Interment will be in Big Cussetah Cemetery under the direction of Buchanan-Wise-McClendon Funeral Home. Wake services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 21 at the Buchanan Memorial Chapel. Mrs. MORGAN died March 18 in the local hospital. She was born April 1, 1909 in Morris. She was a member of the Big Cussetah Indian Church.

Ross H HUNT
Funeral services for Ross H HUNT, 86, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday
at the First Baptist Church in Beggs. Rev Don Walker will officate.
Interment will follow at the Beggs Cemetery under the direction of
Bryant-Spivey Funeral Home.
He was born December 21 1898 and died July 6th in a local nursing home. He
went to work in the oil fields at an early age and retired from Texaco.
Surviviors include a stepson, William S KNIGHT, of Oklahoma City and
three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Hazel GOINS, 98, a resident of Broken Arrow, died on April 30, 1992 at Broken Arrow. She was born on April 8, 1894 in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos GOINS, in 1979, and by one son, Elmo GOINS, in 1978. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 1992 at McClendon Chapel. Burial will be in Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of McClendon Funeral Home.
James P. MORONEY Funeral services are pending for James P. MORONEY, 97, a resident of Okmulgee. Mr. Moroney died on May 1, 1992. He was born on August 15, 1895.
Leo B. GASAWAY, 79, died April 30, 1992 at the local hospital. He was born in Pittsburg Co. on November 22, 1912. He lived there until he moved with his family to Okmulgee. He helped his father with the Gasaway Dairy until he was married in 1933 to Miss Donna DANIEL.
Willie THORNTON, SR. A resident of Okmulgee, died on April 24 in Tulsa. He was born March 10, 1903 in Texas. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the Cleave Memorial Church of which Mr. THORNTON was a charter member. Rev. Fredro Givena will officiate. Burial will be in the Northwest Cemetery under direction of Dyer Funeral Home.

FARRILL HOLLINGSWORTH - Okmulgee, OK
Donna Kay HOLLINGSWORTH FARRILL, 54, a resident of Morris and a former
resident of Okmulgee, died Sunday July 11, 1999 in a Tulsa hospital.
Mrs. FARRILL was born June 11, 1945 in Denison, Grayson, TX to Elbert P.
and Julia M. REYNOLDS HOLLINGSWORTH.
Mrs. FARRILL is survived by her husband, Robert W. FARRILL of the home; her
mother Julia HOLLINGWORTH of TX; one son Bryan WINDHORST of OK; two daughters
Vicky LIVELY and Donna THRILKILL both of OK.; two brothers, Jerry HOLLINGSWORTH
of OK and Victor HOLLINGSWORTH of CO.; two sisters Rachel GLENN of TX and
Jenny Lee ALVAREZ of TX. and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday July 15,1999 in the chapel of the
Kelley Funeral Home, Okmulgee, Ok. Dr. Bob BURCH will officate. Burial will
follow in the Morris Cemetery.
