HICKS
OKEMAH - Norma Jean HICKS was born July 19, 1939, in Okemah. She died December
10 1990, at the Creek Nation Community Hospital in Okemah. Funeral services
were held December 13 at the Buckeye Creek Baptist Church. Officiating the
service was Rev. Robert JONES and Rev. Jake MARSHAL. Burial was in the Ahfonke
Cemetery.
She was married to Benson HICKS in November of 1962. No other information
was given on her family or survivors.
DICK
OKMULGEE - Conner DICK was born March 16, 1907 in McIntosh County. He died
December 5, 1990, in Muskogee. No information given in this issue of the
funeral services or burial.
He was a retired carpenter and a member of Okmulgee Indian Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille DICK, in 1970; two sons, Billy
DICK in 1985 and Benjamin DICK in 1952; two daughters, Sylvia DICK i n1985
and Elizabeth DICK in 1950.

WILEY
EARLSBORO - Wilburn Sonny WILEY was born September 26, 1920,
near Dustin. He died January 27, 1991, at the Veterans Administration Hospital
in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held January 30 at the Thleqarle
Indian Baptist Church with Rev. George BUNNY and Rev. Richard Eastman WHITLOW
officiating. No information was given on the place of interment.
He was a retired school superintendent, a former director of Indian Education
for Oklahoma and a former executive director for Creek Nation. He was a member
of the Glorietta Indian Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and the Masonic Lodge.
He had been a pilot with the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was shot
down and held as a prisoner of war in Germany for two years.
He was the son of Mose and Mariah Robison WILEY, both deceased. He married
the former Billy Jean TAYLOR on September 26, 1939, in Dustin. She preceded
him in death April 5, 1989. His survivors include his son, David Mose WILEY
of Ada; his two daughters, Tresha BROCK of Oklahoma City and Patsy SCHMIDIKOFER
of Earlsboro; two brothers, Louis Speedy WILEY of Tecumseh and
Charles WILEY of Mannford; three sisters, Leatrice COACHMAN of Oklahoma City,
Francis MILLER of Weleetka, and Etta Jean CONNERS of Washington, D.C.; eight
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
JOHNSON
SAPULPA - Bertha Louise JOHNSON was born April 27, 1935, in Okemah. She died
January 18, 1991, at the Tulsa Regional Medical Center. Funeral services
were held January 22 at Little Quarsarty Church near Cromwell with Rev. Edward
BEAR and Rev. Jimmy ALEXANDER officiating. Burial was in the Quarsarty Cemetery.
She was a member of the Cedar River Baptist Church in Holdenville. She was
survived by her husband, Frank JOHNSON; her daughters, Donna JOHNSON, Francine
POTS, Cynthia TAYLOR, Mattie JOHNSON, and Joy BARTON, all of Tulsa; brothers
Mosey HARJO of Tulsa and Thomas HARJO of Sapulpa; a sister, Lucille KING
of Holdenville; and 20 grandchildren.
WILSON
TULSA - Charles Joseph WILSON was born March 8, 1941, in Claremore. He died
January 19, 1991, at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services were held January
23 at Little Cussetah Church with Rev. Willis KNIGHT and Mike HARJO officiating.
No information was given on the place of interment.
He was survived by his sons, Freeland Douglas WILSON and Berry FARMER, both
of Tulsa, Gregory WILSON of Pennsylvania; daughters Sabrina WILSON of CA,
Tsianina WILSON of the Middle East, Madana MAKHANI of Tulsa, and Indra MAKHANI
of New York; brothers Douglas FREEMAN of Sapulpa, and Michael WILSON of CA;
sisters Beccy WHITETREE of KS, and Virginia LANDERAS of CA; and eight
grandchildren.
HARJO
OKEMAH - Mandy HARJO was born November 13, 1920, at Cromwell. She died January
19, 1991, at Mission Hill Hospital in Shawnee. Funeral services were held
January 23 at First Baptist Church in Okemah with Rev. Willie Herrod and
Rev. Jimmy ANDERSON officiating. [Burial was at Okemah Cemetery.]
She was a member of Little Quarsarty Baptist Church. She had been employed
many years in the Bearden Post Office and as a teachers aide in the
Bearden School System.
She was the daughter of Hannah and Alex HARJO, both deceased. She was survived
by her husband, Rev. Roman HARJO; one son, Allen HARJO of Tulsa; four daughters,
Norma DOUGLAS of Chandler, Nova CARPENTER of Layton, UT, Barbara COLLINS
of Tulsa, and Cora BEAR of Holdenville; eight grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
HICKS

of Seminole; one sister, Wanda LITTLE of Okemah; and five grandchildren.
DICK
OKMULGEE - Conner DICK was born March 16, 1907, in McIntosh County. He died

He was a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille
DICK, in 1979; two sons, Billy DICK in 1985, and Benjamin DICK in 1952; and
two daughters, Sylvia DICK in 1985, and Elizabeth DICK in 1950. His survivors
include his sons Joe DICK and Wallace DICK, both of Fresno, CA; his daughter,
Emma EASTWOOD of Okay; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
MARSHALL
MUSKOGEE - Steven Eugene MARSHALL was born June 24, 1965, in Claremore. He
died in December 1990 at his home. No death day was given. Funeral services
were held December 27 at Hickory Ground No. 1 Baptist Church with Rev. Mitchell
TAYLOR officiating. Pallbearers were Ronald BUTLER, Wesley BUTLER, Paul HARJO,
Bruce HARJO, Robert MANLEY and Buddy MANLEY. Interment was in the Gambler
Family Cemetery.
He was a member of Hillabee Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother,
Lee MANLEY of Muskogee; his father, Eugene MARSHALL of Muskogee; his maternal
grandparents, Martin and Minnie MANLEY of Checotah; his paternal grandmother,
Goldie MARSHALL of Tulsa; four brothers, Gerald MARSHALL of Tulsa, Bobby
MARSHALL, T.J. MARSHALL, and Clayton MARSHALL, all of the home; and three
sisters, Eugenia MARSHALL of Tulsa, Sharon MARSHALL and Janessa MARSHALL,
both of the home.

BERRYHILL
OKEMAH - Polly Tvkse Ann Barnett BERRYHILL was born August
23, 1916, in Okemah. She died February 22, 1991. Funeral services were held
February 25 at the Springfield Methodist Church in Okemah with the Rev. John
LOWE and Joe TIGER officiating. Pallbearers were Billy BARNETT, Clarence
YAHOLA, Phil JACKSON, David BARNETT, Ronnie WILLIAMS and George WILLIAMS.
Burial was at the Barnett family cemetery near Weleetka.
Those surviving here include her two brothers, Hixie BARNETT and Walter BARNETT;
her sister, Lasinda BARNETT; her daughter, Mary Barnett MARTIN; her son,
David Allen SIOUX; three half brothers, James BARNETT, Jesse BARNETT and
Hulley BARNETT; grandchildren Teresa Ann MARTIN, Steven Craig MARTIN, Terri
Lynn MARTIN, Michael Don MARTIN and Steve THOMAS.
BERRYHILL
OKMULGEE - Togo Micco BERRYHILL was born February 22, 1911, in Okmulgee.
He died February 14, 1991. Wake services were held February 18 followed by
funeral services on February 19 at the Newtown Methodist Church. Officiating
the service was Rev. George BRUNER. Pallbearers were Frank STARR, Bill JONES,
Johnny WILSON, Jerry WILSON, Dave POWELL, Curtis SIMMERS and Russell POWELL.
Interment was in the Tallahassee Cemetery.
He was a retired minister and chairman at Tallahassee Methodist Church, where
he was a member. He had been a medic stationed in New Guinea during World
War II.
He was survived by his wife, Lilly BERRYHILL, of the home; one son, Alfred
BERRYHILL of Okmulgee; one grandson, Gregory Allan BERRYHILL of Okmulgee;
and one great grandson, Kenneth BERRYHILL of Okmulgee.
SCOTT
WELEETKA - Robert Lee SCOTT was born July 24, 1915, in Weleetka. He died
February 11, 1991, at a Tulsa hospital. Funeral services were held February
14 at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Weleetka with Rev.Mike KENNEDY officiating.
Masonic rites were conducted at Weleetka Lodge No. 214.
He was a retired construction worker, a member of the Howell Memorial Methodist
Church in Dickson, TX, a Mason at Lodge No. 214 in Weleetka, and a member
at Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Galveston, TX, and the Carpenters Union.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine SCOTT of the home; a son, Gary SCOTT
of the home; two daughters, Delorus PACK of Hope, AR, and Linda SCOTT of
the home; three brothers, Dr. Taylor SCOTT of Stillwater, Joe Mack SCOTT
of Galena, KS, and Mason Henry SCOTT of Dewar; three sisters, June GREEN
of Savanna (GA?), Jean SAWATZKY of Phoenix, AZ, and Darlene McELYEA of Weleetka;
five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other relative and friends.
HAYNES
OKMULGEE - Jonas John HAYNES was born March 25, 1934, in Henryetta. He died
February 12, 1991, in Okmulgee. Funeral services were held February 14, 1991,
Shurden Chapel in Henryetta with Rev. Larry CHESSER officiating. Pallbearers
were Felix HAYNES, Jay HAYNES, Donald SMITH, Andy TECUMSEH, Gerald SMITH
and Robert SMITH. No information was given on the place of interment.
He was a retired maintenance worker. He married the former Wanda NEWSOM in
1989. She survives. His other survivors include his three sons, Randy HAYNES
of Sapulpa, Jonas HAYNES of Idaho, and James Haynes of Okmulgee; his six
daughters, Angie HAYNES, Laura HAYNES, Sharmaine HAYNES, Michelle HAYNES,
Kathy HAYNES, and Lynetta HAYNES; his mother, Annie HAYNES of Okmulgee; two
brothers, Felix HAYNES of Okmulgee and Daniel HAYNES of Tulsa; four sisters,
Marie CONLEY and Elouise BEAVER, both of Okmulgee, Cindy SMITH of Weleetka
and Louise TECUMSEH of Twin Hills; eight grandchildren; and a host of nieces
and nephews.
RIDDLE
WICHITA, KS - William RIDDLE was born December 21, 1922, in Huttonville.
He died February 3, 1991. Graveside services were held February 7at
Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Air Force Chaplain David Johnson
officiating. Pallbearers were the U.S. Army Guard, Fort Riley, KS. Honorary
pallbearers were William A. RIDDLE, Traina RIDDLE, Calvin MARTIN, Gary GEORGE,
Woxie LYDAY and Gabe LYDAY.
He had served in the U.S. Army for 28 years and retired as a first sargeant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Naomi RIDDLE, a brother,
Prentis RIDDLE, and sisters, Lillian RIDDLE and Phibbie RIDDLE. His survivors
included his sons, William RIDDLE of Wichita, KS, and Traina RIDDLE of Laguna
Beach, CA; his two daughters, Leah GEORGE and Sabrina MARTIN, both of Grand
Forks Air Force Base, ND; brothers Cab RIDDLE of Kansas City MO, Haskell
LYDAY, Woxie LYDA and Gabe LYDAY, all of Wichita, KS, Cecil LYDAY of Rockville,
MD; sisters Ardena JOHNSON and Maxine WILLIAMS, both of Wichita, KS, Hazel
ELBERT of Bowie, MD, and Sophie LYDAY of Charleston, VA; three grandchildren,
Alexandria MARTIN, Emmanuel MARTIN, and William M. RIDDLE.
LANDSBERRY
OKMULGEE - Charles LANDSBERRY was born December 3, 1955, in Henryetta. He
died February 18, 1991. Funeral services were held at the Shurden Chapel
in Henryetta with Richard SCHMUCK officiating. No information was given on
the place of interment.
He was a retired carpenter. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert
LANDSBERRY. He is survived by his parents, Jack A. LANDSBERRY, Jr., and Gladys
LANDSBERRY of Okmulgee; his sisters, Linda SCHMUCK of Spiro, Helen LEE of

HARJO
DUSTIN - Jim B. Harjo was born September 29, 1913, in Wetumka. He died February
20, 1991. Funeral services were held February 23 at High Springs Baptist
Church. Pallbearers were John Nelson THOMAS, Lloyd THOMAS, Wendy WIND, Richard
ANDERSON, George COSER and Wayne COSER. Interment was in the Wind Family
Cemetery.
He was a retired civil servant worker. He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Lena Wind HARJO; his parents, John and Peggy HARJO; one daughter, Connie
Lynn HARJO; and one brother, Duke HARJO. He was survived by his wife Mildred
HARJO of the home; his five sons, Duke HARJO and Norman HARJO, both of Sapulpa,
Jim B. HARJO, Jr., and Francis HARJO, both of Okmulgee, and John HARJO of
Denver, CO; one stepson, David BIRDCREEK of Rogers, AR; one step-daughter,
Beverly SULLIVAN of Tulsa; two sisters, Bernice THOMAS and Helen BUNNY, both
of Okmulgee; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
FISH
DUSTIN - Albert Lee FISH was born March 24, 1944, in Tahlequah. He died February
20, 1991, at his home. Funeral services were held February 22 at the Merritt
Funeral Service Cottage Chapel with the Rev.John RILEY officiating. Pallbearers
were Ray FISH, Roy FISH, Bobby PATTERSON, and Donald FISH. Interment was
in the Fish Family Cemetery near Dustin.
He joined the U.S. Marines in 1965 and served 18 months in Vietnam. He left
the service after four years, returned to Oklahoma and was employed as a
carpenter until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Redbird and Betty FISH. He is survived
by his six brothers, Ray FISH and Bill FISH, Jr., both of Dustin, Roy FISH
of Morris, Donald FISH of Hanna, Ronald FISH of Oklahoma City, and Frank
FISH of Wetumka; his two sisters, Linda PATTERSON of Morris and Mary FISH
of Oklahoma City.

DEERE
OKMULGEE - Isaac DEERE was born May 15, 1900, in Okmulgee County. He died
March 27, 1991, in St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa. Funeral servicers were
held March 20 (30?) at Montezuma Baptist Church in Okemah with Rev. Kyle
TAYLOR and Rev. Willis KNIGHT officiating. Pallbearers were Gary PICKETT,
William SHADE, Wesley SHADE, Roger WATERDOWN, Ronnie PROCTOR and Sean DEERE.
Honorary pallbearers were Lynn HOGAN, Jimmy DEERE, and Dean DEERE. Burial
was in the Montezuma Cemetery.
He was retired from Okmulgee Glass Company. He was preceded in death by one
son, Eunice DEERE. He was married to Selee ROBERTS on May 1, 1931, in Okemah.
She survives. His other survivors include one daughter, Lula Mae MESSER of
Okmulgee; three sons, Tom DEERE and Sammy DEERE, both of Badland, TX, and
Wilson DEERE of Liberty Mounds; nieces Rhoda BURGESS, Ruth GAMBLE, Josephine
MORGAN, Lorine CHICK, and Marion DAVIS; nephews, Little Joe SMITH, Big Joe
SMITH, Eddie SMITH and Sam SMITH; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren,
and five great-great grandchildren.
LONG
OKMULGEE - Harold LONG was born November 11, 1931, in Okemah. He died February
26, 1991. Graveside funeral services were held March 1 at the Salt
Creek Cemetery in the Wilson Community with the Rev. Bill EVANS officiating.
He worked in the ranching and oil field business. He was survived by his
wife, Juanita LONG of the home; his three sons, Bobby LONG of Morris, Ricky
LONG of Okmulgee, and Harold LONG, Jr., of Wilson; his five daughters, Joyce
BUNYARD of Okmulgee, Kathy KRASCH of Muskogee, Darlene CREASON of Haydenville,
Renee MAHAN of the Wilson community, and Kristy LONG of the home; three sisters,
Clois COLE of Beggs, Lizzie Mae STARKLEY of Okmulgee, and Arlene STARKEY
of Okemah; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
DAVIS
OKEMAH - Edward Lee DAVIS was born September 14, 1944, at Claremore. He died
March 15, 1991, in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held March 20 at
Little Quarsarty Baptist Church near Okemah, with Rev. Jake MARSHALL, Rev.
Ray TAINPEAH and Rev. ANDERSON officiating. No information was given on the
place of interment.
He was a U.S. Marine veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He
was a member of Little Quarsarty Baptist Church and Thlopthlocco Tribal Town.
He was the son of Wilson DAVIS and Rosa Mae Berryhill DAVIS. His father survives
and lives in Shawnee. His other survivors include his five sisters, Dorothy
DAVIS of Shawnee, Virginia TIGER of Holdenville, Vera WHITLOCK and Gloria
JOSHUA, both of Oklahoma City, and Linda WEST of Locust Grove; his three
brothers, Jeff DAVIS of Ada, Charley DAVIS of Sapulpa, and David JOHNSON
of Oklahoma City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

LARNEY
HENRYETTA - Thompson Henry LARNEY was born October 20, 1916, in Okmulgee
County. He died April 19, 1961, in Henryetta. Funeral services were held
April 23, 1991, in Shurden Chapel. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in
Weleetka.
He was retired from the City of Weleetka. He was a member of the Honey Creek
Methodist Church and a World War II veteran.
He was survived by his father, Mitchell LARNEY of Weleetka; three brothers,
Richard W. LARNEY of Henryetta, Samuel Lee LARNEY of El Monte, CA, and James
F. LARNEY of Auburn, CA; two sisters, Charlotte F. SYDEN of Irving, TX, and
Josephine K. NOAH of Weleetka.
ROBERTS
OKEMAH - Cainey ROBERTS, Sr., was born February 10, 1905, in Indian Territory.
He died April 9, 1991, in the Creek Nation Community Hospital. A wake service
was held April 11 at Shurden Chapel in Henryetta. Funeral services were held
April 13 at Nuyaka Indian Baptist Church, where he was a member. Officiating
the service was Rev. Willis KNIGHT. Burial was in the Roberts Family Cemetery.
He was a retired rancher of Okfuskee County. He was the son of Kendall and
Mary ROBERTS, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a daughter,
Mary LEITKA, in 1980. He married Stella PIERCE on May 19, 1938, in Okemah.
She survives. He was also survived by four daughters, Patty FACTOR, Judy
ROBERTS, Patsy PIGEON, and Louise MCNAC, all of Okemah; two grandsons that
Cainey and Stella adopted and raised, Joe LEITKA of Okemah and Chris LEITKA
of the U.S. Army in Fort Leonard Wood, MO; one brother, Stanley ROBERTS;
three sisters, Elsie ROBERTS and Selee DEERE, both of Okmulgee, and Ina HICKS
of Okemah; 20 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
CHILDERS
TULSA - Daniel Edward CHILDERS was born September 3, 1933, in Wewoka. He
died April 15, 1991. Funeral services were April 18 at Ninde Garden Chapel
in Tulsa. No information was given on the place of interment.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. He was a salesman
with Ramsey Chevrolet and a long time deacon on First Christian Church.
His survivors include his wife, Maxine CHILDERS, of the home; a daughter
and son-in-law, Christie Dianne and Warren SINGLETON of Bentonville, AR;
a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Edward and Brenda CHILDERS of Broken Arrow;
two brothers, Victor F. CHILDERS of Tulsa, and Kenneth L. CHILDERS of Glenpool;
two sisters, Barbara Jean GILLESPIE of Coweta, and Joyce Ann BEAR of Tahlequah;
three grandsons, Michael Sean SINGLETON and Patrick Daniel SINGLETON, both
of Bentonville, AR, and Aaron Edward CHILDERS of Broken Arrow; an uncle,
John WILLIAMS of Albuquerque, NM; an aunt, Ethel PITTMAN of Eufaula; and
many nieces and nephews.
HELTON
OKMULGEE - James HELTON was born November 10, 1926, in Sapulpa. He died April
16, 1991. Funeral services were held April 19 at Smith Funeral Chapel with
the Rev. Jonas PARTRIDGE officiating. Burial was in the South Heights Cemetery.
He attended Lone Star and Euchee Mission Indian School in Sapulpa. He was
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Army of Occupation Medal
and Victory Medal. He also served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member
of First Baptist Church of Okmulgee. He moved to the Creek Nation Elderly
Housing Complex in 1981.
His survivors include one daughter, Sharon HARRIS of Okmulgee; a brother,
Newman HELTON of Sapulpa; three sisters, Wanda CHAVEZ of Naples, IL, Catherine
EVANS of Kiefer, and Mildred BETTIS of Tucson, AZ; and three grandchildren.
BRUNER
OKMULGEE - Sarah BRUNER was born April 16, 1899, in Stonebluff, Indian Territory.
She died April 16, 1991 in Okmulgee. Funeral services were held April 19
in the Concharty Indian Methodist Church with the Rev. Newman FRANK officiating.
Burial was in the Bruner Family Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel BARNETT and Samaria Colbert
BARNETT, her husband, Edward BRUNER, in 1957, and a son, Walter BARNETT,
in 1989. She is survived by her daughter, Louvinia BRUNER of Okmulgee; two
sons, Miller BRUNER and Robert BRUNER, both of Okmulgee; a half-sister, Kizzie
MILLER of Stonebluff; three grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
BARNETT
CHECOTAH - Lou Ella BARNETT was born February 20, 1919, in Checotah. She
died April 3, 1991. Funeral services were held April 5 in the First
Baptist Church of Checotah, where she was a member. Officiating the service
was Rev. Elbert SMITH. Pallbearers were George SMITH, Harold BACON, Stanley
McINTOSH, Calvin JONES, Ken JETTON, and Clarence McGEHEE. Burial was in the
Greenlawn Cemetery.
She was a retired junior chemist from Phillips Petroleum Company and a retired
bookkeeper from Panhandle Bank and Trust of Borger, TX. She was a member
of Canadian River Gem and Mineral Society, various square dancing clubs and
the First Baptist Church of Checotah. She was the daughter of Marshall D.

McCOMBS
EUFAULA - Phippie McCOMBS was born January 30, 1915, at Eufaula. She died
March 29, 1991. A song service was conducted March 31 at Blacks Funeral
Home Chapel with funeral services following on April 1 at Tuskegee Indian
Baptist Church, where she was a member. Officiating the service were Rev.
Rudolph COLBERT and Rev. Charles THOMPSON. Pallbearers were Jack BELCHER,
Tom McCOMBS, Taylor PHILLIPS, Byar BEAVER, Gary COLBERT and Perry McCOMBS.
Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
She attended school at Deeres Chapel. She was active in the Senior Citizens
Center and with the Muscogee-Wichita-Seminole Assembly committee for 30 years.
She was the daughter of James and Susan Poloky CHARLES, both deceased. She
was also preceded in death by three half sisters, Rhoda BARNETT, Christine
FRANCIS and Lena DEERE; and two brothers, Rufus CHARLES and Sam CHARLES.
She married James McCOMBS in September 1941 in Eufaula. He survives. Her
other survivors include one sister, Mable JONES of Muskogee; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
BIGHEAD
MOUNDS - Konzie BIGHEAD, Jr. was born October 22, 1931, in Mounds. She died
in April 1991. No day of death was given. Funeral services were held in the
Pickett Chapel Indian Methodist Church, where he was a member. Officiating
the service were Rev. Thomas LONG and Mike HARJO. Burial was in the Woodland
Cemetery in Sand Springs.
He attended Chilocco School and Liberty High School. He was a painter, had
served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
His survivors include his wife, Louise BIGHEAD; stepdaughters, Marie FOSHEE
and Connie BUETNER, both of Amarillo, Tommie DEARMAN of Midland, TX, and
Priscilla MASON of Sand Springs; stepsons, Chester LEWIS of Sand Springs,
and Carl LEWIS of Kansas City; a sister, Mae TULSA of Mounds; and 18
grandchildren.
HARJO
WETUMKA - Lillie Mae HARJO was born September 6, 1909, near Okmulgee. She
died March 25, 1991, at the Creek Nation Community Hospital in Okemah. Funeral
services were held March 29 at Sand Creek Baptist Church, where she was a
member. No information was given on the place of interment.
She was a retired baker and homemaker. She was employed for several years
by the Lassen Hotel in Wichita, KS. She spent the last several years in Wetumka.
She served for many years in the Sand Creek church as Sunday School teacher.
She was the daughter of Aaron and Miley Johnson YARHOLA, both deceased. Her
husband, Albert (Mongey) HARJO, also preceded her in death on September 26,
1989. She was survived by her two sons, Glenn HARJO of Wichita and Gene HARJO
of Ada; and her daughter, Delores MAMBI of the home; 13 grandchildren, along
with several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
SMITH
WETUMKA - Robinson SMITH was born July 23, 1923, at Carson. He died March
31, 1991, at the Wetumka General Hospital. Funeral services were held April
4 at Middle Creek Baptist Church No. 1, where he was a member. Officiating
the service was Rev. James WESLEY. No information was given on the place
of interment.
He was raised and attended school in the Carson community. He entered the
U.S. Army in 1943 and served during World War II before his discharge in
1946. He re-enlisted in 1950 and served in the Korean Conflict before his
discharge in 1952. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 539
in Henryetta. He was employed by the Middle Creek Ranch for 18 years and
also the Seminole Nation, through its public health division, as a construction
inspector. He served as a Deacon at the Middle Creek church.
He was the son of Joe and Nola Bruner SMITH, both deceased. Also preceding
him in death were a son, Robinson SMITH, Jr., in 1953, and a daughter, Jeanetta
McCOY, in January 1991. His survivors include three sons, Michael SMITH and
Timothy SMITH, both of Dustin, and Mark SMITH of Wetumka; a daughter, Monica
SPEARMAN of Alderson; a sister, Minnie LONG of Holdenville; 12 grandchildren,
four great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
BARNETT
EUFAULA - Austin Buddy BARNETT, Jr., was born October 9, 1951,
at Talihina. He died March 4, 1991. No information was given on the date
or place of the funeral or interment.
He graduated from Hanna High School in 1970, entered the U.S. Air Force and
served in Korea until 1974. He was employed as a welder. He was a member
of Hillabee Baptist Church.
He was the son of Austin and Mamie Tiger BARNETT, both deceased. He was survived
by his four daughters, Nicole BARNETT, Ashley BARNETT and Sherrie BARNETT,
both of Coweta, and Amie Lynn BARNETT of Okmulgee; three sisters, Augusta

McINTOSH
BROKEN ARROW - Lemuel MCINTOSH was born August 12, 1929, in Broken Arrow.
He died April 21, 1991, at Claremore Indian Hospital. Information on the

for outstanding achievements in football and baseball. He attended Bacone

He was employed with the Tulsa County Highway Department for 35 years. He
was a lifetime member of the Haikey Chapel United Methodist Church.
He was the son of Rev. Ben McINTOSH and Ella McINTOSH, both deceased. He
married the former Betty DRAKE in 1955. She survives. His other survivors
include his son, Wayne Sonny MCINTOSH; his daughter, Lynne McIntosh
PHILLIPS; three grandchildren, Brandy, Brandon, and Shauna (no last names
given); four brothers, Murphy MCINTOSH, Jesse MCINTOSH, Ben Luke
MCINTOSH, and Paul MCINTOSH; and many nieces and nephews.
SIMMER
HENRYETTA - Paul SIMMER was born April 3, 1905, in Weleetka. He died April
19, 1991, in Henryetta. Funeral services were April 23 at the First Freewill
Baptist Church, where he was a member. The service was officiated by Rev.
Kenneth MAJOR. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Weleetka.
He was a construction work. His survivors include his wife, Mary SIMMER of
the home, his son, William SIMMER of Modesto, CA; two grandsons, one
granddaughter, one great grandson, one great granddaughter and two
step-daughters.
SEVIER
LAWRENCE, KS - Gregory Gregg Allen SEVIER was born July 23, 1968,
in Tahlequah. He died April 21, 1991, at his home in Lawrence, KS. Funeral
services were held April 24 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence with
the Rev. Robert PINEZADDLEBY officiating. Burial was in the Pearl Sevier

JENKS - Norman H. GREGORY was born April 1, 1908, near Jenks. He died May
25, 1991, in Jenks. Funeral services were held May 28 at Jenks United
Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial was at South Heights Cemetery
in Sapulpa.
He was a BA graduate of Central State College at Edmond and earned a
masters degree from the University of North Dakota. He was an educator
with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 30 years, serving Indian schools in
North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska and ended his career as area director
of education for Indian schools in those three states. He was a member of
the Masonic Lodge.
He was the son of Noah G. and Carrie E. GREGORY, both deceased. In 1932,
he was married to Katherine WILSON who preceded him in death. His survivors
include his current wife, Maxine GREGORY, of Jenks; a sister, Clemmie DeGARIMORE
of Tulsa; his two daughters, Norman Katherine OVERSTREET of Mount Vernon,
WA, and Ree GREENWOOD of Atchison, KS; three step-children, Bette KENNEDY,
Tom EDMISTON and Robert EDMISTON, both of Jenks; 11 grandchildren and three
great grandchildren.
DEO
HANNA - Amos DEO was born June 17, 1900, in McIntosh County, Indian Territory.
He died May 30, 1991, at his home in Hanna. Funeral services were held June
3 at the Weogufkee Indian Baptist Church in Hanna, where he was a member.
Officiating were Rev. Jimmy ANDERSON, Rev. Rudolph COLBERT, and Rev. Willie
HERROD. Burial was in the Weogufkee Cemetery under the direction of Merritt
Funeral Service, Eufaula Chapel.
He attended Bacone College. He worked for McDonald-Douglas Aircraft during
World War II and drove for Yellow Cab of Tulsa. He also had worked for the
Colorado Oil Fields and was a retired farmer. He was active in his church
and at various times served as BYPU usher in 1935, deacons helper in
1937, and was ordained a full deacon in 1954 at Wekiwa. He was a member of
the Deep Fork Community Action program for several years and served as a
Creek National Councilman.
He was the son of Thomas and Nancy DEO, both deceased. He was also preceded
in death by his daughter, Margie DEO, and his son, John DEO. He was married
to Ada SIMMONS on March 13, 1926. She survives. His other survivors include
one son, Thomas J. DEO of Hanna; two foster daughters, Amy BRUNER of Holdenville
and Susie HARJO of the home; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
LASLEY
MAGDELENA, NM - Youman LASLEY was born November 30, 1933, in Hanna, OK. He
died April 27, 1991, at his home in Magdelena, NM. Funeral services were
May 3 at St. Mary Magdelene in Magdelena. No information was given
on the place of interment.
He is survived by his wife Lupe LASLEY and son Irean LASLEY, both of the

William BARNETT. She was married to Jacob BARNETT in Bristow in 1954.

He was a Mason at Tulledge Lodge No 201 in Henryetta and received his 50
year pin in April. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Henryetta.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pansy Griffin GRAYSON, in 1980;
one son, Micco Wayne GRAYSON in 1936; three sisters and one brother. His
survivors include his wife Suda GRAYSON of Okmulgee; his three daughters,

Denise GRAHAM of Chandler; step-children, Michael J. TAYLOR of Katy, TX,

OKEMAH - Florence E. Dunson MCELROY was born November 17, 1924, in Okemah.

She attended school in Wewoka, Bearden and Haskell Institute. She was an
active member of Thlopthlocco United Methodist Church south of Okemah and
of the American Legion Auxiliary in Okemah for many years.
She was the daughter of Rev. Thomas and Susie Walker DUNSON, both deceased.
She was preceded in death by her brother Frank DUNSON, and her sister, Lucille
DUNSON. She was married to Paul R.McELROY on November 9, 1952, and they lived
for 30 years in Tempe, AZ, before returning to Okemah in 1985. Her survivors
include her husband, of the home; four children, Kathy SMITH and Thomas Dunson

OKEMAH - Wanda Jean WIND was born January 15, 1923, in Henryetta. She died
September 30, 1991, at her home in rural Okemah. Wake services were held
at the Merritt Cottage Chapel on October 1, with funeral services following
on October 2 at the High Springs Baptist Church south of Okemah, where she
was a member. The services were officiated by Rev. Daniel WIND. Pallbearers
were Carl NOON, Travis WIND, Thomas WIND, Timothy WIND, Vincent LOPEZ and
James BENDER. Burial was in the High Springs Cemetery.
She served the High Spring church for 15 years as treasurer and for many
years as pianist, womans leader and Sunday School teacher. She also
served in the Muscogee-Seminole-Wichita Association as GA director, child
care director and in other MSW programs. She also had been a kindergarten
aid with the Butner School System, and supervisor of the day care center
for Creek Nation.
She was the daughter of James and Mattie HARJO. Her father preceded her in
death. Her mother survives. She was married to Daniel D. WIND on June 4,
1946 at Independence, KS. He also survives. Her other survivors include her
three sons, Allan WIND of Shawnee, Daniel WIND of Tahlequah, and James WIND
of Okemah; her two daughters, Dee LOPEZ of Shawnee, and Loretta NOON of Okemah;
two brothers, Eugene HARJO of Oklahoma City, and Joseph HARJO of Weleetka;
two sisters, Josephine WIND of Wetumka, and Bernice SEALY of Okemah; 15
grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
WASHINGTON
MUSKOGEE - Rev. Billy WASHINGTON was born October 16, 1927, in Henryetta.
He died September 28, 1991, at the Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Funeral
services were held September 30 in Butler Creek Baptist Church with Rev.
Harley BARNOSKI officiating. Pallbearers were Derrick WASHINGTON, Spencer
WILKINSON, Jr., Chris WASHINGTON, Robert WASHINGTON, Arrow WILKINSON and

He was retired from the City of Muskogee after 34 years of service. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Martha WASHINGTON, a brother,

by his wife Susie WASHINGTON, whom he married September 9, 1949 at Ft. Smith,

FIXICO
SHAWNEE - Wallace FIXICO was born April 16, 1918, in Holdenville. He died
September 21, 1991, at the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital in
Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held September 25 at the Seminole Indian
Baptist Church with Rev. Bryant JESSE and Rev. Leon POSTOAK officiating.
Pallbearers were R.C. JONES, Mike JONES, Mike HENDRIX, Javie SANTOES,

He was a forklift operator for 31 years before retiring. He was the son of

WEWOKA - John DEERE, Sr., was born November 10, 1920, in Eufaula. He died

He graduated from Sequoyah Indian Boarding School in 1938, attended Bacone
College for two years, and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater
during World War II. He retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs after 40
years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Minerola McIntosh DEERE;
his wife, Lorraine DEERE; three sisters, Eunice, Margureite, and Marion DEERE;
and one half brother, Wiley DEERE. He is survived by his daughter, Bettie
WILLISTON of Dallas; his two sons, John DEERE, Jr., and George DEERE, both
of Downey, CA; one half-sister, Naomi THOMPSON, and one half-brother, Noah
DEERE of Muskogee; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

DREW
EUFAULA - Robert E. Buster DREW was born June 12, 1921, in Eufaula.
He died September 10, at a Tulsa hospital. A traditional Creek song service
was held September 13 at the residence, conducted by Tuskegee Indian Baptist
Church, followed by funeral services September 14 at the P.R. Ewing Cemetery
at Eufaula with Rev. Belvin Pudgy HILL officiating.
He was a graduate of Eufaula High School and attended Bacone College before
entering the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II, and serving in the
Mediterranean European Theater of Operations where he was awarded the Silver
Star and Purple Heart. He finished his undergraduate education at Southeastern
State College and his master of science degree at Oklahoma State University.
He worked as a teacher and principal in BIA schools in South Dakota, spent
many years in health education with the Indian Health Service and served
from 1963-1970 as assistant chief and chief in the IHSs Office of Tribal
Affairs in Oklahoma City. He was retired in 1980. He was a member of American
Legion Post No. 79 of McAlester, and a life member of the Disable American
Veterans.
He was the son of David and Ora Ola Ewing DREW, both deceased. He was also
preceded in death by brothers, Robert Ewing DREW, Jr., and David Daniel DREW,
Jr.; two sisters, Lee Ola DREW and Eloise Drew MCCARTY. His survivors include
his two daughters, Iris Ann DREW of the home, and Precilla Gail BROWN of
Muskogee; his two sons, Stanley Ray DREW of AZ, and Michael Todd DREW of
McAlester; two sisters, Mrs. Nina NOTARO of Dallas, and Mrs. Ruth WAGONER
of Claremore; one brother, Fred DREW of Milan, NM; his mother-in-law, Minnie
SIMMONS, and a sister-in-law, Pokie EVERETT, both of McAlester; six
granddaughters, two grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.
WATASHE
SAPULPA - Willie WATASHE was born November 27, 1915, in Sapulpa. He died
September 8, 1991, at his home in Sapulpa. Funeral services were held at
Little Cussetah Baptist Church, where he was a member and a deacon. Officiating
the services was Rev. Willis KNIGHT. Burial was in the Long Family Cemetery.
He had lived in Sapulpa all his life and was retired from the Riley Southwest
Corp. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Angie Bucktrot WATASHE.
His survivors include his wife, Annie WATASHE; stepson Larry LONG of Sapulpa;
brothers, Ernest WATASHE of Glenpool, and Joe WATASHE of Sapulpa; and sisters
Marie JACK of Sapulpa, and Mary Ann CROOK of Coweta.
PROCTOR
WETUMKA - Eloise PROCTOR, 70, was born August 20, (c. 1921), at Wetumka.
No year of birth was given. She died August 8, 1991, at Creek Nation Community
Hospital. Funeral services were held August 12 at Sand Creek Baptist Church,
where she was a member. The services were officiated by Rev. Woody FIELDS
and Rev. Ledon BUCKLEY. Pallbearers were Lance HARJO, Sonny MCKINNEY, Clifford
BUCKLEY, Bronco HARJO, Ben GIVENS, and Robert BERRYHILL.
She had attended Bacone College in Muskogee and worked at Lillian Russell
Manufacturing in Wewoka and Seam Proof in Holdenville as a seamstress for
many years.
She was the daughter of Bunny and Betsy Fife HARJO, both deceased. She was
also preceded in death by her husband, Sam PROCTOR in 1954, and four brothers.
Her survivors include her daughter, Betsy PROCTOR of Wetumka; a brother,
Shot HARJO of Wetumka; and several other relatives and friends.
SMITH
CASTLE - Joe SMITH was born March 4, 1917, in Okfuskee County. He died September
5, 1991, in Okemah. Funeral services were held September 9 at Prairie Springs
Baptist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Frank BILLY officiated the service.
Pallbearers were Wayne TIGER, Chester SMITH, Danny TIGER, Allen FIXICO, Amon
TIGER, and Ton COOPER.
He was a rancher and the son of Jim and Malley SMITH, both deceased. He was
also preceded in death by his wife, Dora Mae Hicks SMITH, whom he married
in 1940, and an infant son, Roy Lee SMITH. He was survived by his daughter,
Mary Ann TIGER of Castle; four grandchildren, Peggy, Wayne, Danny, and Amon
(no last names given); three brothers, Eddie SMITH, Little Joe SMITH and
Sam COOPER, all of Okemah.
GOUGE
DUSTIN - Lizzie GOUGE was born May 19, 1922, in Okfuskee County. She died
September 20, 1991, in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held at the Woodrow
Gouge residence in rural Dustin on September 23 with the Rev. Johnson ROBERTS
officiating. Burial was in the Gouge Family Cemetery.
She was a homemaker and active in the Salvation Army. She was preceded in
death by her parents, William SMITH and Nellie Fields SMITH; a brother, Harper
SMITH, and a half-sister, Rosanna POWELL. She was survived by her husband,
Woodrow GOUGE; her daughters, Edna BEAR of Okemah, Linda HARJO of Oklahoma
City, and Maxine WATKINS of Chickasha; her sons, George GOUGE, Margie GOUGE,
and Randy GOUGE, all of Oklahoma City; a grandson, David GOUGE; a brother,
Johnson SMITH of Gore; sisters, May FRYE and Lucille SUMKA of Henryetta,
and Louise SMITH of Glenpool; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
CANARD
WAGONER - Eugene Gene Russell CANARD was born May 10, 1911, in
Wetumka. He died March 15, 1991, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Funeral
services were held March 17 at the Wagoner Mallett Chapel.
Burial was in the Wetumka Cemetery, where he had asked to be buried next
to his father, Roley CANARD, Principal Chief of the Creek Nation for many
years.
He had served with the U.S. Army engineers in the Phillipines during World
War II. He was a member of Thlopthlocco Tribal Town and had served in the
House of Warriors. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He was the son of Roley and Annis Carr CANARD, both deceased. He was survived
by his wife, Ruth S.CANARD of Wagoner; his daughter, Darla Jean ATKINS of
FL; two granddaughters and one great granddaughter; and two brothers, Virgil
CANARD of Albuquerque, NM, and Curtis CANARD of Tulsa.

TULSA
MOUNDS - Betty Sue TULSA was born October 27, 1948, in Claremore. She died
October 13, at the Claremore Indian Hospital. Funeral services were held
October 17 at the Pickett Chapel Methodist Church, where she was a member.
Officiating the service was Rev. Mike HARJO. Pallbearers were Garry BERRYHILL,
Scott BIGPOND, Gilbert MATTHEWS, Fred SAPULPA, Sonny BIGPOND, and Carlin
THOMPSON. No information was given on the place of interment.
Her survivors include her husband, John TULSA, daughters Nancy TULSA and
Andrea TULSA, all of the home; her son, Frank TULSA of Tulsa; and sisters,
Augustine WILLIE of Okmulgee, and Martha BIGPOND of Tulsa.
BERRYHILL
OKMULGEE - Anderson Shorty Joseph BERRYHILL was born April 6,
1929, in Okemah. He died October 22, 1991, in Okmulgee. Funeral services
were held October 25 at Creek Chapel Methodist Church, where he was a member.
Officiating the service was Rev. Louis HARJO. Burial was in the Creek Chapel
Cemetery.
He was a retired locksmith. He was married to Ruby Lee SEALY in 1953. She
survives. Also surviving were his two daughters, Vicki OBREGON of Tulsa,
and Carolyn GONCALEC of Houston, TX; his mother, Lena BERRYHILL of Okmulgee;
two sisters, Maxine JACKSON of Schulter, and Betty SHAWNEE of Tulsa; and
four grandchildren.
ASBURY
OKEMAH - Judy Mae ASBURY was born April 4, 1933. She died November 1, 1991,
in Okemah. Wake services were November 3 with funeral services following
on November 5 at the Ryal Community Baptist Church. Rev. Robert Jones officiated
the service. Pallbearers were George HILL, Lewis TULSA, John Wayne TULSA,
Chubby SOWEKA, Richard SOWEKA, and Harry TULSA. Interment was in the Soweka
family cemetery.
She was active in church work. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Lewis and Wysie Scott SOWEKA, and one brother, Jacob SOWEKA. Her survivors
include her husband, Willie ASBURY; her son, Norman ASBURY of Tulsa; two
brothers, Bunnie SOWEKA and Robert SOWEKA; and two sisters, Billie SCOTT
and Alice TULSA, all of the Ryal community.
