DIXON

Sam J. DIXON was born April 12, 1919. He died January 16, 1984, at St. John’s Medical Center in Tulsa. Funeral services were held January 20 at Coffeyville, KS, and graveside services at his interment in the National Cemetery at Ft. Gibson.
He was educated in the Muskogee Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1937. He served two years with the U.S. Navy in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. In Coffeyville, he worked with the Long Bell Lumber company and later was in the construction business. At the time of his death, he operated Dixon Realty Company, which he founded in 1974. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Coffeyville, the American Legion, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge. His parents were Linley D. and Vollie Scott DIXON.
In 1939, he married Mildred CARPENTER, who survives. His other survivors include his two daughters, Jerry Ann DRAFT of Caney, KS, and Vicki CARPENTER of Tulsa; a brother, William DIXON of Kansas City, MO; and two sisters, Ruby PETENOTTE of Paducah, KY, and Lillian RAGSDALE of Muskogee; and four grandsons.

SEVERS
Christine A. SEVERS was born August 16, 1904, in Oklahoma Indian Territory. She died January 15, 1984, at her home in Wetumka. Funeral services were held January 18 at Sand Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie FISH and Rev. Jimmy ANDERSON officiating. Pallbearers were Daniel BUCK, Sam YARGEE, Richard DUNSON, Alec FISH, George ALEXANDER and Sam ALEXANDER. No information was given on the place of interment.
She was the daughter of Hettie DUNSON and John ALEXANDER. She was preceded in death by her husband, Simond SEVERS, and her step-daughter, Lucy SEVERS, who died January 6.
Her survivors include one son, James SAWYER of Coweta; one half-sister, Holly KENDRICK of Pawhuska; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

MCCOSAR
Rev. James McCOSAR died January 9, 1984. No information was given on his age or date of birth, only that he was born in Hughes County. Funeral services were conducted January 13 at Many Springs Church in Holdenville. No other information was given on his funeral or interment.
He had served as pastor of several Indian churches, including Weikwa Baptist Church near Sand Springs, and Okmulgee Indian Baptist Church, where he served for ten years, commuting from Tulsa where he had moved in 1958.
His survivors include his wife, Vivian McCOSAR, of the home; three sons, Bobby McCOSAR, James McCOSAR, Jr., and Arthur McCOSAR, all of Tulsa; one daughters, Evelyn TOFPI of El Reno; one sister, Lizzie FACTOR of Wewoka; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

ROBERTS
Rev. Willie (Sudie) ROBERTS, Jr., was born June 25, 1931 in Okemah. He died January 9, 1984, in the Veteran’s Hospital in Muskogee. Funeral services were held January 12 at Nuyaka Indian Church with the Rev. Dan PHILLIPS officiating. Pallbearers were his nephews. Interment was in the Nuyaka Cemetery.
He attended school at Bacone in Muskogee, Seneca in Miami, and later at Chilocco. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 45th Division, Co. C, 279th Infantry. He was ordained at the High Springs Baptist Church. He was also a self employed interior and exterior painter in the Owasso area. He was with the Creek Nation Indian Department at the time of his death.
His survivors include brothers and sisters, Stanley ROBERTS of Okmulgee, Rev. Harley ROBERTS of Okemah, Ladona BEACH of Tulsa, and Richard HENNEHA of Minnesota; one uncle, Samson BUTCHER of Castle; two aunts, Janie KNIGHT of Okemah, and Mandy WESLEY of Checotah; and a host of other relatives.

RILEY
Amosee RILEY was born August 1896 in Okfuskee County. He died January 17, 1984, in the Henryetta Medical Center. He was taken to the church January 19 and funeral services were conducted January 10 (20?) at the Hutchachuppa Indian Baptist Church, where he was a member. Officiating was Rev. Jessee BRYANT. Interment was in Hutchachuppa Cemetery.
He was married to Nellie WEST in Okmulgee County. She preceded him in death in 1971. His survivors include two daughters, Alice HARJO of Seminole and Sallie WATSON of Henryetta; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

WEST
Imogene Nolen WEST was born May 1, 1913, in Boynton. She died January 27, 1984, in Bakersfield, CA. Funeral services were held January 27 in Bakersfield at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel. Officiating was Rev. C.E. HANES of the Free Will Baptist Church of Bakersfield, where she was a member. No information was given on the place of interment.
She was employed at the Kern Medical Center until retirement in 1973. She was a member of the Kern County Retired Employees Association and the Ladies Auxillary of the Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.
Her daughter Jean West RICHARDSON preceded her in death in 1975. Her survivors include her husband (name not given) of the home; a son Jimmy Lee WEST of Okmulgee; one brother, Frank NOLEN of Lancaster, CA; five sisters, Thelma CORNFIELD and Nadine WHITFIELD, both of Bakersfield, CA, Virginia LOVELACE of CA, Ruth PERKINS and Betty Jean NOLEN, both of Oklahoma; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

TIGER
Lucy Mae Lindsey TIGER was born December 5, 1961, at Claremore. She died January 12, 1984, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Funeral services were held January 16 at the Nuyaka Indian Baptist Church with Rev. Harley ROBERTS officiating. Interment was in the Harjo family cemetery.
Her survivors include her husband, Clarence TIGER, Jr., of the home in Sapulpa; one son, Frank LINDSEY of Henryetta; one daughter, Joella TIGER of the home; her parents, Alex LINDSEY of Henryetta, and Amy LINDSEY of Okemah; two sisters, Ann LINDSEY and Katherine POWELL, both of Henryetta; two half brothers, Sandy WATSON and Thomas WATSON, both of Eufaula; five half sisters, Delores WATSON of Okemah, and Roberta LINDSEY, Susie LINDSEY, Jeebee LINDSEY and Liza LINDSEY, all of Henryetta; and several nieces and nephews.

JACOBS
Rev. John JACOBS was born December 1, 1903, in McIntosh County. He died January 18, 1984, in a Henryetta nursing home. The body was taken to the church on January 20 and funeral services were held January 21 at the Arbeka Indian Baptist Church, where he was a member. Services were officiated by Rev. Bill BEAVER and Rev. John LOWE. Interment was in the Jacobs family cemetery.
He was a retired minister and served for many years as a missionary preacher. He retired in 1981. He married Susan DAVIS in Ft. Smith, AR. She preceded him in death in 1978.
His survivors include three sons, Samuel JACOBS of Checotah, Joseph JACOBS and Timothy JACOBS, both of Henryetta; one daughter, Leona JOSIE of Henryetta; one brother, Louis JACOBS of Henryetta; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

GRAY
In memory of Deacon Moses Gray, who died one year ago, a combination Easter Sunday and Memorial service was held April 22, 1984, at Bemo Creek/Seminole Missionary Baptist Church.

Moses GRAY was born February 24, 1901 in Eufaula Indian Territory. He died March 19, 1983, in Tulsa. Funeral services were held March 22, 1983, at Bemo Church in Bixby with Rev. Harely BAMOSKI and Dr. Frank BELVIN officiating. Pallbearers were Chuck McHENRY, Sonny BURGESS, Eugene BIRDCREEK, Richard BEMO, Sam McINTOSH, and Berlin WIEFER. Honorary pallbearers were Sidney LEE, George BUNNY, Chebon FIFE, Joey FIFE, Sian McINTOSH, Chili McINTOSH, Cherrie McINTOSH, Li'l Cherrie McINTOSH, John TECUMSEH, Andy TECUMSEH, Johnnie WILSON, Newman FRANK, Eddie TECUMSEH, and Chebon McINTOSH. Interment was at Bemo Church.
Other recognitions associated with the funeral were: Head Deacon, Anderson BURGESS; head grave diggers, Joe FIFE and Berlin WEIFER; closest male relative, Joe FIFE of Bemo Church and Jim FIXACO of Thewalee Church; eldest female relative, Susie LOONEY of Springfield Church and (deceased) Sissy Wert of Cedar Creek in Eufaula.
Moses Gray was from the Tiger clan and his Indian name was Kotcha. He was from Arbeka Tribal Town. A list of his kinfolks, ancestors and descendants include the names GRAY, TECUMSEH, HARJO, JOHNSON, BEMO, WHITLOW, FIFE, STAR, LOONEY, FIELDS, McINTOSH, PALMERS, JULY AND BUNNY.
The memorial included an extended list of his immediate family and other relatives. In Memory - Personal history
Moses was born into the prominent family of Reverend Siah Gray THOMPSON (Pastor of Big Arbor Church, Medicine Man and Captain of LightHorseMen), and Mary TECUMSEH Thompson. From this marriage came 12 children. Moses was the last surviving child. Other prominent members of his family were Reverend Gray and the Gray girls.
Moses became a Christian in his early 20s and was later ordained Deacon in Big Arbor Church, which is considered the Mother Church of 13 Creek Churches throughout the Creek Nation. Moses felt he should build a church where his family could have a place to worship - so he began Bemo Mission, named for his deceased Father-in-law, Charley BEMO. With the blessings of Big Arbor Church, Bemo Church was dedicated on Easter Sunday 25 years ago. Moses lived to see nearly all of his children and grandchildren baptized.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers and sisters. His last sister, Anna GRAY, died one year to the day before Moses. It was recorded that Moses died under the exhortation of his favorite cousin, Joe FIFE, who sang and prayed as Moses Gray went home.

PINEZADDLEBY
Rachael Lowe PINEZADDLEBY was born October 8, 1918 in Okfuskee County. She died March 19, 1984, at South Community Hospital in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held March 22, 1984, at the Thlopthlocco Methodist Church with Jess SULLIVAN officiating, assisted by Janet and J. B. DUNN. Interment was in the LOWE Family Cemetery.
She was the daughter of John and Annie LOWE. Her great-grandmother was a CONARD. She married Robert PINEZADDLEBY at Anadarko on August 30, 1945. She was a member of the Angie Smith Church the United Methodist Women, the Kiowa Veteran Auxillary, Viet Nam Auxillary, Intertribal Senior Citizens organization, and the Inter-tribal Hymn Singers.
She is survived by her husband Robert of Oklahoma City; daughter Marry Anne PINEZADDLEBY of Oklahoma City, and son Johnny PINEZADDLEBY of Oklahoma City.

ARCHER
Sarah (Cox) ARCHER was born May 28, 1922 in Okmulgee. She died March 12, 1984, in Okmulgee. She was a member of the Newtown Indian Methodist Church. Funeral services were held March 15 at Cantrell Ivory Chapel with Rev. Dan SEXTON officiating. Pallbearers were Richard DAWSON, Kenneth DAWSON, Bobby HORNE, Freddy SADLER, and Clay SADLER. No information on where she was interred.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clois ARCHER in 1943. Survivors include son Peter ARCHER, of the home; and three brothers, Rufus COX of Ada, Claude COX (Chief of the Muscogee Nation) and Porter COX, both of Okmulgee; and one sister, Ann GORDON of Okmulgee.

PHILLIPS
Michael Ray PHILLIPS was born July 21, 1956 in Cushing. He died March 12, 1984, in Tulsa. He had lived at 1314 North Oklahoma, Okmulgee. Wake services were held March 15 at the Cantrell Ivory Chapel in Okmulgee officiated by Rev. Bridge CHUCKLUCK. Funeral services were conducted March 16 at the Chapel in Okmulgee with Rev. Frank BEVENUE and Rev. John RILEY officiating. Pallbearers were Barney HARJO, Herman HARJO, Joe HARJO, Jr., John PHILLIPS, Gary JACKSON, Wally NEWPORT, and Scott ADAMS. Interment was in the Okmulgee Indian Baptist Cemetery.
Survivors include his father and mother, James PHILLIPS and Jorene WALKER both of Okmulgee; brothers James B. PHILLIPS, Jr. of Okmulgee, and Steven Wayne PHILLIPS of Tulsa; his grandparents, Joe HARJO of Henryetta, and Elizabeth HARJO of Okmulgee.

HARJO
Rev. C. D. HARJO was born January 7, 1918, in Okfuskee County. He died March 16, 1984, in the Creek Nation Community Hospital at Okemah. He had been a resident of Okfuskee County all his life. Funeral services were held in the Greenleaf Baptist Church on March 19 with Rev. Roley HAYNES and Rev. Thompson BILLY officiating, Interment was in the Greenleaf Cemetery.
He was married to Marie SANDS in October 1942. She preceded him in death. On March 4, 1984, Greenleaf Church had honored Rev. Harjo for having served 13 years as a deacon and 25 years as their pastor.
He is survived by his five sons, Roley HARJO and Stephen HARJO, both of Tulsa, Wayne HARJO of Ada, Wilson HARJO and Cornell HARJO, both of Oklahoma City; his four daughters, Irene TIGER of Owasso, Ora DAY of Reno, NV, Carolyn POWELL and Hulda LITTLE, both of Tulsa; and 13 grandchildren.

AMBER
Joy (July) AMBER was born October 12, 1958, at Checotah. She died March 11, 1984 in a Tulsa hospital. At the time of her death she was employed by the Sapulpa Glass Plant. Indian services were held March 13 in Bledsoe Funeral Chapel in Checotah with the funeral held the next day at Deep Fork Hillabee Baptist Church south of Checotah, where she was a member. Services were conducted by Rev. Marvin KELLY. Pallbearers were Jack WEAVER, Mike DELMIER, Paul ZIMMERMAN, Gene JULY, Billy WELCH, and Nathan HARPER.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph AMBER, her son Jessie AMBER, and her daughter Melody AMBER, all of the home; her parents, Mr and Mrs. Joe JULY of Eufaula; two brothers, Keith JULY of Broken Arrow ad Jeremy JULY of Eufaula; two sisters, Sonja JULY and Angie GRAHAM, both of Eufaula; her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Wiley JULY, and Mr. and Mrs. Nora STEWART, all of Checotah.

TIGER
Lela (McNac) TIGER was born October 15, 1916 at Ryal. She died March 12, 1984, in the Creek Nation Community Hospital at Okemah. Following Wake services on March 15 in the Shurden Funeral Chapel and Night services that night at the Yardeka Indian Baptist Church, her funeral services were held the next day at the Yardeka church with Rev. Roley HAYNES officiating, assisted by Rev. Josh HARJO. Pallbearers were Jimmy JONES, Ed MOORE, Jr., Carney ROBERTS, Ken GRIMES, Phil HOMERATHA, and Perry BEAVER. Interment was in the Yardeka Cemetery.
Prior to her death, she had lived at 108 South Okmulgee in Okmulgee. She was a member of the Yardeka church where she was a Woman's Leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cody TIGER, January 11, 1967.
Survivors include her four sons, Kenneth TIGER, Matthew TIGER, and Martin TIGER, all of Okmulgee, and George TIGER of Anadarko; one brother, David HARJO of Okemah; and ten grandchildren.

WESLEY
Winey (Deere) WESLEY died on March 10, 1984, at the Creek Nation Community Hospital. No birthdate was given. Funeral services were held on March 14 at the Quarsarty Baptist Church. Interment was at Quarsarty Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her two children, Jimmy DEERE and Kissie ROBERTS, both of Cromwell; and one sister, Martha Simmer of Cromwell.


May 1984

LOWE
Randy LOWE was born February 15, 1966, and died May 12, 1984, after an accident immediately following his graduation from Hanna High School. Funeral services were conducted at the Hanna First Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Bill WHEELER, Hanna School Superintendent, assisted by Rev. Frank BILLY. Pallbearers and singers were students and friends from Hanna High School.
During the graduation ceremony preceding his death, Lowe received a Science Award and recognition for his athletic ability in basketball. During this school year he also received All-Star and All Conference awards in basketball. He served as captain of the Hanna basketball team for the past two years. He had attended Hanna School during all twelve of his school years.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos LOWE of Hanna, one brother, Mose LOWE, of the home, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom LOWE, also of Hanna.

CUMMINGS
Mildred (McCombs) CUMMINGS was born January 16, 1917, at Vivian. She died in May, 1984, (no day given) after a lengthy illness at Creek Nation Community Hospital in Okemah. She was a retired employee of the Creek Nation. Services were held May 10 at Tuskegee Indian Baptist Church, where she was a member. Rev. Dan PHILLIPS officiated. Burial was in the Tuskegee Cemetery.
She attended Eufaula Public Schools and Chilocco Indian School and married Thomas R. CUMMINGS in Fort Smith, AR, in 1956.
Survivors include her son, Tommy CUMMINGS, Jr. of Muskogee; her five sisters, Evelyn Sue EDDY of Globe, AZ, Vivian McCOSAR and Elizabeth HILL both of Tulsa, Mary DEERINWATER of McAlester, and Bessie Lou POPE of Paoli, KS; one brother, George W. McCOMBS of Wewoka; two stepdaughters, Louella LEE of Eufaula and Mary Catherine GIERTZ of Covina, CA; step sons, David CUMMINGS of Eufaula and Connie Ed CUMMINGS of Oklahoma City; two grandchildren and several step grandchildren.
Sister DAVIS was born November 24, 1903, in Railford. She died April 25, 1984, in the Creek Nation Community Hospital. She had been a resident of Hanna. Funeral services were conducted at the Hillabee Indian Baptist Church with Rev. Austin BARNETT officiating. Interment was in the Hanna Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden Funeral Home.
Survivors include her son, Billy DAVIS of McAlester, and her nieces and nephews.

CAHWEE
Rev. Jimmie CAHWEE was born May 20, 1915 in Sapulpa. He died in March, 1984 (no day given). Funeral services were held March 31at the Mutte Loke Indian United Methodist Church, rural Bristow, with the Rev. John LOWE and Rev. Thomas LONG officiating. Interment was in the Bigpond Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.
He had lived all his life in the area except for his Army service in WWII and Korea. He was a member of the American Legion. He had worked as a rate clerk for the Sand Springs Railway 26 years as well as being a minister. He began his ministry in 1952 in the United Methodist Church and founded Mutte Loke Church. He later pastored at the Choska Circuit four years. He was past district treasurer for the United Methodist Indian Missionary Conference and chairman of the Finance Committee of the CFA.
He is survived by his wife, Wanney CAHWEE; four brothers , Mose CAHWEE of Sapulpa, William CAHWEE of Tulsa, Amos CAHWEE of Sand Springs, and David CAHWEE of Depew; and one sister, Betty JONES of Sapulpa.

DAVIS
Sister DAVIS was born November 24, 1903, in Railford. She died April 25, 1984, in the Creek Nation Community Hospital. She had been a resident of  Hanna. Funeral services were conducted at the Hillabee Indian Baptist Church with Rev. Austin BARNETT officiating. Interment was in the Hanna Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden Funeral Home.
Survivors include her son, Billy DAVIS of McAlester, and her nieces and  nephews.

FREEMAN
Jess FREEMAN and Margaret Alexander FREEMAN were husband and wife and died within 23 days of each other. Both their obituaries were printed in this same issue of the Muscogee Nation News.
Jess FREEMAN was born July 8, 1906, in Okmulgee, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He died October 19, 1984, in the Okmulgee Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were conducted October 23 at the Newtown United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Officiating the services were Rev. Patrick FREEMAN and Rev. Thomas LONG, under the direction of Rev. Willie GOODEN. Pallbearers were his grandsons. Interment was in the Okmulgee cemetery. The family requested memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association.
He was retired from DX Sunco Oil Company in 1964, a member of CIMA Museum in Okmulgee, a charter member of the Council of Indians, a conference lay leader of the United Indian Methodist Church, and a member of the Creek Nation Council.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Alexander FREEMAN, and their eight children, Donna Fay RHODES of Tulsa, Mary ARKEKETA of Sand Springs, Richard FREEMAN and John FREEMAN, both of Tulsa, Patrick FREEMAN of Kansas City, KS, Jesse FREEMAN, Jr. of Moore, Theodore FREEMAN and Everette FREEMAN, both of Washington, William E. FREEMAN of Tahlequah; three sisters, Eliza Mae HICKS of Henryetta, Ida SPARKS of Altus, and Joanne STAND of Tulsa; three brothers, Andrew FREEMAN of Coweta, Isparacher FREEMAN of Claremore, and Ruben FREEMAN of Sand Springs; 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

FREEMAN
Margarett Alexander FREEMAN was born July 18, 1910 in Wetumka. She died November 12, 1984, in Tulsa. Wake services conducted by William ALEXANDER and Willie GOODIN were held November 14 , followed by funeral services officiated by Thomas LONG and Patrick FREEMAN on November 14. Both services were at the Newtown United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Pallbearers were Richard FREEMAN, Patrick FREEMAN, Jesse FREEMAN, Jr., Ted FREEMAN and Bill FREEMAN. Interment was in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women and past president of the Oklahoma Indian Women's Conference.
In addition to her eight children, 24 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren named in her husband's obituary, her other survivors include her two brothers, William ALEXANDER of Oakhurst and George (Toby) ALEXANDER of Lamar; and a half brother, Henry HARJO of Wichita, KS.

BERRYHILL
Blanche BERRYHILL was born August 26, 1916 at Schulter. She died October 11, 1984, at her home. She was affiliated with the Higher Dimension Evangelistic Center in Tulsa. Funeral services were held October 15 at the Shurden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Thomas BERRYHILL, Jr., officiated. Interment was in the Berryhill family cemetery.
She was married in Okemah on June 26, 1938, to Tom BERRYHILL, who survives. Other survivors include her five children, Thomas BERRYHILL, Jr., of Okmulgee, Michael BERRYHILL of Henryetta, Perry BERRYHILL of Coweta, Elliot BERRYHILL of Colorado Springs, CO, and Rita WILLIAMS of Henryetta; two sisters, Pauline BILLY of Schulter and Helen POOLE of California; and nine grandchildren.

HICKS
Ella HICKS of Rt. 2, Henryetta, was born December 9, 1903, in Okemah and died October 24 in the Henryetta Medical Center. She was a member of the Silver Springs Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted at the Shurden Funeral HOme with Rev. Bridge CHUCKLUCK, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Senora Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe HICKS, on August 1, 1958. Survivors include her four sons, Henry HICKS of Shawnee, George HICKS of Dewar, Houston HICKS of Henryetta, B. R. HICKS of Beggs; two sisters, Sarah HICKS of Castle and Annie BEAR of Okemah; 24 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

LEE
Alice LEE was born December 1, 1918. She died November 1, 1984, at the Henryetta Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted November 5 by Rev. Louis BIBLE at the Hickory Ground No. 2 Indian Baptist Church, where she was a member. Interment was in the Hickory Ground Church Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon LEE, December 3, 1979. Her survivors include her nine children, Solomon LEE, Jr., Sidney LEE and Sylvia TULSA , Simeon LEE , Shirley HILL and Susanne RANDALL , Samarion JACKSON, Sharon FRAZIER and Sandra FRAZIER; 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FRY
Noah FRY was born October 22, 1911, in McIntosh County. He died November 5, 1984, at his home. He was a Army veteran of World War II, and a retired farmer. He lived at Rt. 2, Henryetta. Funeral services were held November 8 at the Timmy Thompson home, south of Salem, with Rev. Roley Haynes officiating. There was no information on the place of interment.
Survivors include four brothers, Harbie FRY, Loney FRY, Sarty FRY and Sam FRY, Jr., all of OK; one sister, Bessie FIFE of OK; and several nieces and nephews.

BRUNER
Riley Roman BRUNER was born January 15, 1921, one mile east of the old Carson school. After surviving a long and illustrious military career, he died August 19, 1984, in the Dallas Veteran's Hospital. There were no details of the location or date of his funeral services or interment.
He served in 18 campaigns in time of war, was wounded once in WW II, once in Vietnam, and was a prisoner of war for 33 months in Korea. He retired once to Irving, Texas, but was called back to active duty in March 1970 to serve in the 31st Infantry Regiment in Chu Lai in a landing zone near the border of Laos. He retired a second time in June 1972. During the course of his long military career, Bruner received numerous individual awards and commendations, including: the Combat Infantryman’s Badge three times, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” Device, the Purple Heart (with Oak Leaf Cluster); as well as group awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, and 27 other awards and decorations. He also received foreign decorations that included: Croix De Guerre Avec Etoile (French), De Bronze (French) which is the Cross of War with Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation Freedom Medal (Korea) and the Presidential Unit Citation (Vietnam).
He is survived by his wife, Josefa BRUNER of Irving, Texas; his father Roman BRUNER of Carson; two brothers, Raymond BRUNER of Wetumka, and Jewel BRUNER of Carson; one sister, Lillie Mae MYERS of Chandler, AZ; three uncles, seven aunts, and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene BRUNER.
