W.M. FRANCIS
After an illness of several days, caused by a severe attack of typhoid fever, County Surveyor W. M. FRANCIS died at his home some twelve miles north-west of Mangum Sunday night at 11 o'clock.
The above information reached here early Monday morning, and fell heavily and sorrowingly upon the hearts of those whose good fortune it was to know the deceased. Mr. FRANCIS was not an old time resident of the county, having been here but a little more than two years, but in that short time his goodly qualities had so manifested the true character of the man that one had but to know him to appreciate him. His life, as told by them who best knew him, was made up of manly actions and charitable deeds. His very nature was to rise above the petty strifes of mankind and spread his generous disposition broadcast over his felow creatures.
In the death of W. M. FRANCIS his family has lost a true father, his community a valuable neighbor and the county a loyal citizen. May the memory of his kindly heart serve to make better those of us who are left behind, and his ashes rest in peace.
Submitters Note: W. M. "Bill" FRANCIS was born 12 Mar 1839, MO and died 21 July 1901, Greer Co.,OK. He was married to Jane GLENN in 1863. He was survived by his wife of the home, two daughters; Sallie FRANCIS HOOD, Willow, Clara FRANCIS GOODE, Brinkman, four sons; Philip L. FRANCIS, William M. FRANCIS,Jr., James C. "Jim" FRANCIS and Bryant L. FRANCIS. He is buried in Riverside cemetery, Mangum, OK
