Maye Frances COPELAND
May Frances (FOLSOM) COPELAND, 93, of Stigler, passed away March 2, 1999 at the Muskoggee Regional Medical Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 5, 1999, at the Mallory Chapel, with Rev. James W. Edmison officiating. Burial followed at Garland Cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home, Stigler.
Pallbearers were Richard Dixon, James Collins, Ed Balunas, Clois Huggins, Doug Basden, and Donnie Lockwood.
Copeland was born August 26, 1905 in Garland, Indian Teritory to Alice Lee (GIPSON) FOLSOM and Robert Lee (Bob) FOLSOM. Maye as an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation. She was an excellent seamstress and taught school at Garland School for two years.
In 1937, she married Robert Earl COPELAND, nows as R.E., who died in 1964. They owned and operated Copeland Oil Company in Stigler, Oklaoma for many years.
She worked several years in the offices of the County Treasurer and the County Clerk, Haskell County, Stigler, Oklahoma. Maye was appointed as Justice of Peace to Haskell County and served as Municipal Judge forthe City of Stigler for 18 years. She also worked very closely with the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol.
Maye COPELAND has been an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 16, Stigler, for 61 years. She served as Worthy Matron in 1946, and also served as Conductress and District Deputy. Maye served the Stigler Chapter as Secretary for 48 years until she retired in 1997. She was instrumental and helped constitute the Hoyt and Keota Order of Eastern Star.
Maye was active in the establishmet of the McAlester, Oklahoma Chapter of the Order of Rainbow Girls. She was awarded the Grand Cross of Color by the Grand Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow in McAlester. She organized the Order of Rainbow in Stigler and was the first Mother Advisor.
She was also a member of the Stigler Rebecca Lodge #62.
Throughout her lifetime, she was a loyal member of the first United Methodist Church. She served as Methodist Women's Treasurer for many years.
Maye F. COPELAND will be missed by her friends and family. She leaves to mourn her passing nine nieces, eight nephews, ad a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all of her siblings: Walter, Robbie, Dewey, Maud, and Haskell.
