The Cole Collection

Back row, left to right: Cecile Cole Lovell and Opal Cole (later Canada).
Front row, left to right: Otho, Irene, Herman, and Anna (Milligan) Cole.
Compiled and Submitted by
 Sharon McAllister

In addition to more conventional keepsakes, sisters Cecile COLE LOVELL and Opal COLE CANADA saved many clippings from the papers serving the Luther area, starting with the Luther Register, continuing with the Luther Citizen, and finally the Oklahoma County News. This collection covers not only family members, but also many other people who have lived in the Luther area at some time. From northeastern Oklahoma County, it spreads northward to cover some residents of southeastern Logan County and eastward into Lincoln County – including parts of the Unassigned Lands opened by the Run of 1889, the Iowa Lands opened by the Run of 1891, and the Kickapoo Lands opened by the Run of 1895. The region was settled by black and white pioneers in almost equal numbers and remains racially diverse to this day, but I have made no attempt to identify individuals on this list by race.

Because this is a work-in-progress, I have information on many people who do not appear in this list. If you're looking for ancestors in the Luther area, please write to me whether or not you find the name you seek here. Sharon McAllister
