HUTCHINS
James Norwood HUTCHINS, 77, of Muskogee, died April 25. Services were held
April 27, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Mr. Dale GAITHER officiating. Burial
was in the Molly Fields Cemetery.
Mr. HUTCHINS was born October 20, 1917, to Thomas M. and Geneva Bell PHILLIPS
HUTCHINS. He worked in a sawmill most of his life, retiring from Beaver Handle
Company in 1970.
Among those he left behind include his wife, Dorothy, of the home; three
daughters, Wanda Faye and Rachel Christine, both of Okla., and Linda of Texas;
two sons, Leonard of Okla., and Charles of Maine; and two brothers, Boyd
and Harold, both of Okla.
THOMAS
Paul M. THOMAS, 79, died February 20. Memorial services were held February
23, with Rev. Bobbie WEBER officiating.
Mr. THOMAS was born November 14, 1915, to Ellis P. and Lena MORRISON THOMAS.
He was a direct descendant of Nancy Ward, the last "Beloved Woman" of the
Cherokee Tribe, and was a tribal member.
Paul had served as a director for T.A.N. He was personally responsible for
growning hundreds of dogwood trees that have been planted throughout Texas
and Louisiana.
Among those he left behind include daughters, Marilyn, Kathleen and Paula,
of Texas; two brothers, Howard of N.M. and Jess of Okla.; two grandchildren;
and one great grandchild.
FOURKILLER
Commodore "Red" FOURKILLER, 59, of Stilwell died April 21. Services were
held April 24, in the Stilwell Community Building with Rev. Chris SCOTT and
Rev. Judy DOTSON officiating. Burial was in the Stilwell City Cemetery.
Mr. FOURKILLER was born October 10, 1935, in Stilwell to Judge and Daisy
JONES FOURKILLER. He was in the gospel music ministry for more than 40 years.
He formed the Cheiftains Quartet along with his brother, Billy, in 1955.
They traveled from coast to coast presenting their programs of gospel music.
They performed with the Contemporaries of their era in venues ranging from
the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Red was the last surviving member of the origianl Chieftain Quartet. He was
a song composer and a regular performer at local homecomings, singings, church
benefits and many funerals. He was reared and attended school in Adair County
and had served in the national guard.
Among those he left behind include his wife, Irene; his children, J.C. of
Texas, Terrye of Okla., and Theresa of Ark.; two sisters, Florence and Joan,
both of Okla.; two brothers, Larkin of N.C., and Woodrow of Okla; and seven
grandchildren.
DICK
Andy DICK Str., 61, of Crawfordville, Ark., formerly of Tahlequah, died April
25, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Graveside
services were held April 29, at the Long Springs Cemetery with Rev.
Bridge CHUCKLUCK officiating.
Mr. DICK was born January 17, 1934, to George and Jennie FIELDING DICK. He
was reared and educated in Tahlequah. Following high school, he entered the
U.S. Army, from which he retired.
Among those he left behind include his wife, Ruby, of the home; four daughters,
Brenda, Carol and Necoe, all of Texas, and Minnie of Va.; three sons, Andy
Jr. of Ark., George of Calif., and Hansford of Texas; one brother, Homer
of Wash.; one sister, Elizabeth, of Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
FIELDS
Rick FIELDS, 29, of Kansas, Okla., died April 30. Services were held May
3, at the Long Prairie Baptist Church with Rev. Robert NOFIRE officiating.
Burial was in the Long Prairie Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver
Funeral Home. The Cherokee Nation Firefighters served as pallbearers.
Mr. FIELDS was born October 28, 1965, to Thomas and Joann YOUNGPUPPY FIELDS.
He was reared and educated in Little Kansas. He enjoyed Indian craftsmanship
and artistry and was a member of the Cherokee Nation Firefighters.
Among those he left behind include his mother, Joann; two daughters, Natasha
and Tracie; one son Darren; the mother of his daughters, Sylvia; one brother,
Thomas; and one sister, Latisha, all of Okla.
QUINTON
Johnie QUINTON, 80, of Tahlequah, died April 30. Services were held May 3,
at the Reed-Culver Chapel. Burial was in the Kansas Cemetery, Kansas,
Okla.
Mr. QUINTON was born March 10, 1915, the son of Cornelius and Katie WOLFE
QUINTON. He was reared and educated in Tahlequah. During W.W.11, he served
in the U.S. Army. He was a carpenter.
Among those he left behind include one son, Michael John; five brothers and
sisters, Lewis, Jackie, Buddy, Mae and Hazel, all of Okla.
FRY
Joyce Rowena FRY, 54, of Seneca, Mo., formerly of Oaks, died May 2.
Graveside services were held May 5, in the Russell Cemetery near Oaks
with the Rev. Archie CRAIG officiating. Burial was under the direction of
Wilson-Cunningham Funeral Home of Locust Grove.
Mrs. FRY was born April 13, 1954, in Tahlequah. She was a homemaker. Among
those she left behind include her husband, Harold of the home; one son, Sherman
of Mo.; four daughters, Rojeanna, Roshella, Sherry and Ida, all of Okla.;
one half-brother, Russell of Okla.; three half-sisters, Carol of Ark., Verna
and Lila, both of Okla.; and ten grandchildren.
HOLLAND
Bessie Juanita HOLLAND, 78, of Tahlequah died May 5. Services were held May
8, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Charles DUVALL officiating. Burial
was in the Holland Cemetery.
Mrs. HOLLAND was born March 12, 1917, in Stroud, Okla., to J.O. and Ada Kathern
YATES PRUITT. She was a homemaker and helped her husband operate the dairy
farm. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club.
Among those she left behind include her husband of the home; two sons, Alfred
of Ark., and Manuel of Okla.; two daughters, Vera and Jane, both of Okla.;
one sister Anna of Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
BALLEW
Billie J. BALLEW, 61, of Cookson, died May 6. Services were held May 9, at
the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Gene Ruth BRUMBACK officiating. Burial
was in the Levi-Cookson Cemetery.
Mr. BALLEW was born July 5, 1933, in Cookson, the son of Billie and Edna
COOKSON BALLEW. He was reared in the Tahlequah and Cookson area. He served
in the U.S. Navy being honorably discharged.
Among those he left behind include his wife, Charline, of the home; mother,
Edna of Okla.; three sons, David and Dirk, both of Okla., and Haskell of
Ark.; one daughter, Amanda of Okla.; and two grandchildren, Eric and Justin.
WALKABOUT
Quinton "Bunk" WALKABOUT, 76, of Tahlequah, died May 6. Graveside services
were held at the Hendrick's Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral
Home.
Mr. WALKABOUT was born July 24, 1918, to John and Jeanette CORDRAY WALKABOUT.
He was reared in the Muskogee area, graduating from the Chilocco Indian School
in 1935. He entered the army in 1942, serving three years. He was honorably
discharged in 1945, with five bronze stars and receiving a medal for good
conduct.
Among those he left behind include two nieces, Beverly of Kansas, and Ginger
of Missouri; one nephew, Joe; and four stepdaughters, Kathy, Judy, Roberta
and Joann, all of Okla.
BIRD
Tookay BIRD, 84, of Tahlequah, died May 12. Services were held May 15, at
the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. Sampson KEENER and Albert ROBBINS officiating.
Burial was in the Swimmer Cemetery.
Mrs. BIRD was born April 27, 1911, to Daniel and Betsy KEENER HORNETT. She
was a life-long Cherokee County resident.
Among those she left behind include many cousins.
CHAPMAN
Geneva Gail CHAPMAN, 50, of Park Hill, died May 13. Services were held May
16, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Charlie YANDELL officiating. Burial
was in the Levi-Cookson Cemetery.
Mrs. CHAPMAN was born September 24, 1944, to Edward Wilson and Opal Lillian
LAWLEY CRAIG. She was a life-long Cherokee County resident and was a graduate
of Tahlequah High School.
Among those she left behind include her companion for the last nine years,
Rodney of the home; two daughters, Libby and Kim; five grandchildren, Brittany,
Brandi, Emily, Ronnie and William; her step-father, J.D.; two sisters, Shirley
and Maxine; and three brothers, Pete, Howard and Rickey, all of Okla.
GIRDNER
Ralph "Jake" GIRDNER, 65, of Tahlequah, died May 12. Services were held May
16, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Wilson PEACE officiating. burial
was in the Hungry Mountain Cemetery.
Mr. GIRDNER was born March 27, 1930, to W.T. and Rosa FOUTCH GIRDNER. He
spent his youth and attended school in Cherokee County and then joined the
U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he moved to
Dayton, Ohio, where he lived for 35 years.
Among those he left behind include his wife, Wanda, of the home; his daughter,
Gale of Idaho; two grandsons, Jared and Brian; three brothers, John, Woodrow
and Leroy; and two sisters, Gladys and Patsy, all of Okla.
CHEATER
William CHEATER, 71, of Welling, died May 14. Services were held May 18,
at the Sycamore Tree Baptist Church with Revs. John GOODRICH and Thomas STILL
officiating. Burial was in the Barber Cemetery.
Mr. CHEATER was born Nov. 14, 1923, to John and Ida CHUNESTUDY CHEATER.
During W.W.11, he served in the U.S. Army as a machine gun specialist.
For 12 years, he worked as an upholsterer at the Cherokee Nation, and
later at Greenleaf Nursery before becoming disabled.
Among those he left behind include his wife of 45 years, Emma, of thehome;
two sons, Dale and Nick, both of Okla.; four daughters, Pearlene, Maxine
and Marquita, all of Okla., and Wilma of Kansas; one brother, Cricket of
Okla.; three sisters, Susie, Rachel and Jessie, all of Okla.; 21 grandchildren;
and eight great grandchildren.
