How You Can Help

Become a Member

Bixby Historical Society is a nonprofit making charity open to the public. We invite you to join us and welcome you to participate in our activities.

Members receive a quarterly newsletter containing historical information about the Bixby area and news about the Society. Other benefits are activities ranging from special events and educational seminars to leadership participation and volunteer work at the ever growing museum. Many new friendships are developed through fellowship with other members.

A special highlight each year is the Pioneer Breakfast where a Bixby family is honored as Pioneer Family of the Year. Other annually scheduled events are a casual Bean Supper during the Green Corn Festival and a Chili Supper with accompanying Pie Auction each February.

Dues collected at Bixby Historical Society pay for Newsletter publication & postage, office & museum supplies, and maintenance of the Museum Compound.   Bixby Historical Society has no salaried employees. The Society and Compound are maintained, solely, by volunteers.

We hope you will join us, share in the experiences at Bixby Historical Society, and enrich the Society with your presence.

Volunteer

The Bixby Historical Society Museum is currently open each Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. These hours place a major restriction on the ability of the public to see the items held by the museum. More volunteers are needed in order to extend the hours.

Volunteers are needed to direct tours, prepare databases, sort photos & documents, and maintain the grounds & buildings. Training is provided. Contact the Bixby Historical Society office or call 366-1200 on Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month, between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Volunteers may, also, leave a phone message.

Share Your Historical Documents & Photos

Often, families have historical documents and photographs they want to share for publication, but need to keep the original items in the family. You may send a quality copy of your item(s) to Bixby Historical Society.

Suggested documents include such items as Bible records, certificates, license, military documents, newspaper & magazine articles, church, school, club & organization records & documents, old cafe menus, old tickets or ticket stubs, old reunion guest lists, land records, other legal documents, business ledgers, invoices, & other records.

Suggested photographs include pictures of your ancestors, family events, old homes in the Bixby area, historical downtown Bixby & Leonard, area businesses, area festivals & other events, area disasters, and cemetery tombstone.

Images for publication in newsletters and other hardcopy need to be scanned and sent at a resolution no smaller than 300 to preserve the quality. Images for publication at our website, only, may be scanned and sent at a lower resolution (between 72 & 96).

Documents and photographs are not limited to the above mentioned items. Send your scanned items to [email protected]. Write Submitted for Publication on the Subject line of your email. Provide as much information as you can about each item, telling what, when, where and who, if possible. Include your name, name of the custodian, if different, and the name of the person to credit for the item if different from the submitter.

By submitting your item, you give Bixby Historical Society the right to present a copy of your item in any non-profit format. The owner/custodian retains the right to sell and present the original item, or copies of it, in any venue.

Copies of items about living persons are NOT accepted for this project. Bixby Historical Society publishes items it deems appropriate for general public viewing. Contact Bixby Historical Society at 366-1200 for information about donating original documents & photographs.
