The Vietnam Veterans Memoiral honors the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and country of the men and women of the armed forces of the United States who served in America's longest war. By virtue of its desingn, the memorial inspires a contemplative experience and puts a human face on a divisive conflict. Veterans, their families, and others find the memorial a place for reflection and healing.

Vietnam Women's Memorial (near the east entrance to the Vietnam Memorial)

A Legacy of Healing and Hope
Over 265, 000 American women served during the Vietnam era (1956 through 1975) and over 11,000 saw duty in Vietnam. The majority served as nurses, caring for thousands of wounded servicemen in the difficult conditions of crowded transports, harsh weather, difficult terrain, and long hours. Between 1964 and 1973, dedicated nurses tended to over 300,000 wounded, saving nearly 98% of those who eventually reached hospitals.

The names of eight women are inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial - see http://thewall-usa.com/women.asp

As of Memorial Day, 2010 the memorial contains 58, 267 names of those who gave their lives or are missing in action. The missing in action are marked with a cross.  When their death has been confirmed, a diamond is superimposed on the cross. Any new names are officially recognized each Memorial Day.

The Wall begins and ends in the center of the memorial. The first panel of the east half begins in 1959. The names are listed in chronoligical order, continuing east and then from the far west end back to the center, ending in 1975
