Chief Warrant Officer Ronald L. Evans 23, of Morrow, killed
in a helicopter crash while on patrol in vietnam, was buried Saturday
with full military honors.
Evans was listed "Missing in action" April 29 when the
helicopter he was piloting crashed and burned. The incident occurred
just one month before he was scheduled to complete a one-year tour
of duty.
"He wrote us often," said his wife Jacquelyn, "but
he never talked about the war. He didn't want to worry us."
He was supposed to come home the 25th of May but had talked about
reenlisting and volunteering for more service in Southeast Asia
she said.
Evans was twice decorated, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross
"for heroism in action while engaged in aerial flight"
in Vietnam and the Air Medal for "meritorious service"
in flight.
He graduated in 1966 from Little Miami High School where he was
21st in a class of 170 and a member of the National Honor Society.
"He was one of our finer kids, a real fine student, never any
problem to anybody, quiet, a top kid," said Fernando Cress,
his high school principal.
He never participated in athletics then," his father said,
"He was too small."
After studying engineering at Miami University for two years he
was drafted into the Army in January of 1969.
He was discharged but immediately reenlisted to go into flight training
and was eventually assigned to the 17th Air Cavalry at Pleiku, RVN.
Evans is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Zink Evans; parents, Nora
and Elvis Evans; two sisters, Sharon and Debra, all of Morrow Route
2; and a half-brother, Richard Evans of Sikeston, Mo.
A military contingent from Ft. Knox, Ky. conducted the military
ceremony at the Morrow Cemetery following funeral services at the
Vale Funeral Home
"Quiet boy? He didn't drink and he didn't run around with the
crowd that did," his father said, "I guess that's what
you call quiet."
