Jacob Wesley Hampton was born in Warren County, Ohio on 11 Oct 1845. He is thought to be the son of Lawson and Ann M. Hampton who are listed as residents of Salem Twp. in Warren County in the 1850 census (dwelling 546, family 547). Lawson Hampton and Ann Maria Short were married in Warren County on 30 Aug 1838.
Jacob enrolled as a Private in Co I, 91st Illinois Infantry at Jacksonville, Illinois on 31 Jan 1865 and was awarded a $100 bounty.. His enlistment was credited to Carrollton, Green Co Ills. Sub. Dist 31 Dist 10. In July, 1865, he was transferred to Co F, 28th Illinois infantry and was discharged at Brownsville, Texas on 30 Jan 1866. After the war he went to Greene County, Illinois and moved back and forth between Illinois and Kansas several times. He finally settled in Brown County, Illinois where he remained until his death on 3 (or 8) Feb 1921 in Mount Sterling, Brown County Illinois. He is buried in the City Cemetery (Find A Grave Memorial# 78640412).
Jacob Hampton and Mary Mills/Milnes were married on 4 Mar 1868 in Green County Illinois. They had three children together. Evelene Hampton b. 4 Jun 1870, Lawson Hampton b. 15 Oct 1872 and Frank Hampton b. 15 Jul 1884. Mary died 1 Jun 1902 in Brown County, Illinois. In June, 1905, Jacob married his 2nd wife, Virginia McFarland, the widow of the late J. S. McFarland.
Jacob filed for a pension on 18 Apr 1891 & on 21 Oct 1907 (Application #1013838, Certificate #847458) for his service in the 91st and 28th Illinois Infantry Regiments.
