  • John E. Taylor (1839-1902) - perhaps Company C 31st Ohio Infantry?
    • 15 Mar 2009 email from Michael Ford - HELP NEEDED.  if you have any information regarding this please let us know
"John E. Taylor (1839-1902) was the second of at least nine children of Samuel (1817-1875) & Patience (1816-1899) (Frybarger) Taylor. From the records I have been able to find he was born about May 1839 in Warren County, Ohio. He resided with his parents on their farms in Hamilton & Salem Townships in Warren County through 1860. On 31 Mar 1861 he married Drusilla Jackson (1837-1908) the daughter of Jacob (1804-1870) & Delila(h) (1804-1858) (Williams) Jackson in Warren County. A son, Wilson G Taylor was born to them in September 1861 in Ohio (probably in Warren County).
" The entire family of Samuel & Patience Taylor (including John, Drusilla & Wilson) emigrated to Van Buren County in Iowa sometime before the 1870 census.
" John & Drusilla had four more children in Iowa: Hillis M (1869-1944), Harry V (1872-). Lenora J (1875-), and Ferma A (1880-). (A compilation of the Jackson family tree done in 1935 by Matella Prickett Doughman shows another child "Gussie" who must have died in infancy but I have no birthdate or direct record. Drusilla does indicate in the 1900 census that she has had six children but only five are living.) The family is shown as living on farms until an 1895 Iowa Census record shows they have moved into the town of Eldon in Wapello County, Iowa. While I cannot ascertain when "Gussie" was born there is an eight-year gap between the births of Wilson & Hillis Taylor which might indicate that John was away for some period of time.
" The Works Projects Administartion 1930's Graves Registartion Survey in Iowa shows John Taylor buried in Eldon Cemetery in 1902 with a comment that he is a Civil War veteran. (see http://iowawpagraves.org/index.php?lc=4&last=Taylor&fc=4&first=John&cid=90). There is a Civil War Pension Index Card that indicates an application #672652 was filed in Iowa on 17 September 1888 for a John E Taylor as an Invalid. This card indicates that his service was with the 31st Ohio Infantry, Company C.
" I have searched all of the data bases that I could find but have been unable to locate a "John Taylor" in the 31st Ohio Infantry or to find a "John Taylor" in other Ohio units that matched up very closely in other respects."

"Joshua P Taylor b 1838, son of William G Taylor and Anna Maria Powers and Joshua V Taylor b 1840, son of Richard Skinner Taylor and Sarah Kiphart Their fathers are brothers, Richard Skinner Taylor and William G Taylor, sons of Joshua and Elizabeth Skinner Taylor from VA.Elizabeth came as a widow (1820) with her four young children from Loudoun Co VA to join her mother and siblings on her father's large Warren County Survey #1552. Her mother and siblings came ca 1814.
I learned from the Warren County log that the two young men, Joshuas, cousins enlisted together on the same day, April 20, 1861 and likewise were mustered into the same company in May of that year. They were first cousins, both direct descendants of Cornelius Skinner & Sarah McMakin of Loudoun Co., VA, original land owner in Warren County, OH. It does not appear they were together at the time of Joshua P's death.
My family record says that Joshua P was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery ... yet this record says Nashville National Cemetery. I checked there and did not find him there. Perhaps, the family moved him to Pleasant Grove. I am attaching a paper I have of Joshua P and as you can see someone earlier, probably my grandfather's sister, Helen Taylor Graham (as she spent years trying to sort out the family) probably didn't know of Joshua P at all and assumed the record was that of Joshua V."

"William Beatty Thacker was born at Goshen, Clermont County, on 6 Jan 1838, son of William Thacker and Hester Beatty. He later moved to Defiance County, Ohio, with his father.
William returned to Warren County after the Civil War, married Mary Callie Lackey there late in 1865, and remained a resident there for many years. (He wrote some of the historical material for the Beers county history, including his own bio.)
He and his wife moved to Traverse City, Michigan about 1883, joining his father and some other family members who had moved up earlier. He died there on 8 Dec 1899 "from paralysis" according to the Traverse City Death Records, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
I hope this information will be useful. (I am descended from one of William's brothers, John B. Thacker, also a Civil War vet, from Defiance.) "

". . . Mr. Thompson had passed the three score and ten mark. He was a veteran of the civil war and probably drew the largest pension of any private soldier in the county. He had drawn $72 monthly for the past 22 years and no one begrudged him it. He and his wife only lately celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary."

"I am researching my great great uncle Hans Christian Thonssen. He was born in Groven, Holstein, Germany on 19 March 1832 and came to the United States on 23 September 1852 on the ship Deutschland sailing from Hamburg . He was married to Mrs. Susan Craig Death on 13 Dec 1883 in Warren Co., OH. He died on 15 March 1916 in Franklin Township, Warren Co., OH. He is buried in Woodhill Cemetery, Franklin, OH.
Christian served in the Civil War as a Private, 9th Ohio infantry, company C, 29 years old at the time of enlistment. Enlisted on May 27, 1861 for a 3 year period. Wounded at battle of Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 20, 1863; mustered out with company June 7, 1864
      (information from http://www.historicalpreservation.org/civilwar/ohio/).
After the war he lived the rest of his life in Franklin, Ohio. He worked as a Millwright for the Death & Croll flour and saw mill. In 1873 he helped to start the Franklin Paper Company. I assume Christian Thonssen was a member of the GAR post 241 in Franklin but I have not yet located the records of that post."
    • email from of Shayne Davidson of Ann Arbor, Michigan dated 31 May 2010:
"I do not know why Christian was not a member of the local GAR post and it surprises me. His brother, B.E. Thonssen, was a member of the St. Louis GAR post. The two brothers enlisted together, probably in Cincinnati..
I have a copy of the obit. I suspect my great grandfather, Gustav Thonssen, wrote it. At any rate whoever wrote it got the immigration date wrong. Christian and his brother Broder Edlef Thonssen came together to the U.S. in 1852 based on my research at Ancestry.com.
I paid a researcher in Germany to obtain all my Thonssen family's christening and death records (which have not yet been indexed at familysearch.org) and Christian's birth year was 1832 not 1831 as stated in death certificate and obit. Here is the record, translated by Hans Peter Voss, April 2009:
Baptismal register of the Evangelic Lutheran church in Hemme, 1832 No.12, born on 19.Mar., baptized on 29.Apr.1832 = Hans Christian Tšnsen, the fourth legitimate child of Hans Tšnsen, an inhabitant in Groven, in the local portion, and of Anthje, nee Low. Godparents: 1. the bachelor Friederich Kohl, the first farmhand at Claus Martin, a farmer in Groven 2. Michel Carstens Jacobs, an inhabitant and carpenter in Groven, and 3. Christina Tšnsen, the daughter of the authority Johann Tšnsen in Hemme. Note: Because of a later wish of the parents got this child the name Hans Christian.

He was from Chester County, Pa., and living with his brother, Andrew Timler before the war, so enlisted in Warren County. The story in the family matches the service record for John 'Limber.' He died on the way home from the war.
