    • photo of gravestone at Lebanon Cemetery - Interment #4839 in Old Section lot 302 on 19 Feb 1925
    • Image from The Western Star, Lebanon, Ohio, Thursday February 19, 1925
"... A romantic story is built around the wounding and subsequent saving of the life of Dr. Adams on the Chickamauga battlefield. At that time he wore the shoulder straps of a lieutenant but was serving as acting captain of his company because of the death in battle of his superior officer. Lieutenant Adams was shot in the right temple and was left for dead by his comrades in a temporary retirement from the field. Among the advancing Confederates was a soldier whom fate directed to the fallen Adams' side. This man who turned over the body of the supposed lifeless Union officer was a man named Dunlevy, a childhood playmate of Adams in Lebanon. He found the heart of the fallen man still beating and he took off his coat and rolled it up for a pillow and gave Adams his canteen of water. When the Confederates were forced to retreat and Adams was again among Union men but was later taken prisoner by the Southern forces and sent to a field hospital. When on the road to recovery he was paroled by the South and arrived home after eight months in military hospitals. War records show that he was one of two men who recovered from a bullet wound in the temple. ..."

Part I, Volume II; Chapter I.--Wounds And Injuries Of The Head; Section III -- Gunshot Fractures Of The Inner Table Of The Skull

      page 165-166
In many of the cases classified under the head of gunshot fractures of both tables of the skull without known depression, the details of the symptoms and treatment are very meagre, and it is impracticable to verify the diagnoses from the evidence presented in the reports. The following series fairly illustrates this class of cases, in which the instances of recovery and pension largely predominated.
CASE.--Lieutenant John Adams, Co. G. 35th Ohio Volunteers, aged 30 years, was wounded at Chickamauga, September 19th, 1863, by a conoidal musket ball, which fractured the upper portion of the right side of the frontal bone; he also received a gunshot wound of the hand. Treated at the hospital of the 3d division, Ninth Corps, the hospital at Stevenson, Alabama, the officers' hospital at Nashville, and the general hospital at Covington, Kentucky, where he arrived May 26th, 1864, and was discharged June 3d, 1864. In September, 1867, he was a pensioner, his disability being rated three-fourths and permanent.
