"Mr.
C. P. Wheaton.
C. P. Wheaton was born in Clearcreek Township, Warren County, Ohio, February
2, 1841. He attended school at Five Points, where he secured such education
as the schools of that day could give, but being a great reader and a close
observer, he acquired a fund of information which has served him well in
all his business relations.
August 11, 1862, he enlisted
in the Union Army, serving throughout the war, or until mustered out,
July 17, 1865. Under General George H. Thomas he saw much hard fighting
in Tennessee and on November 30, 1864, at Franklin, Tennessee, in that fierce
struggle, he was severely wounded by being struck in the right shoulder
by a minie ball. As he lay fain from the excessive loss of blood, the Confederates
charged, and in passing where he lay, one attempted to stick him with his
bayonet, but young Wheaton shot him with a pistol and thus saved his own
life. That pistol he still possesses, and prized highly. While being hauled
from the field to the hospital, twenty miles away, two of the three others
in the ambulance died, and he himself was more dead than alive. In about
six weeks he was able to return home on a furlough. In the latter part of
the war he saw service under General Schofield, in the east. He was a member
of three different regiments, viz.: 79th, 146th and 183d O. V. I. Returning
from the war, he again took up the active life of a farmer. In 1869 he was
married to Miss Rachel M. Snethen, a native of this county. One son has
been born to them. Our subject served one term as Corporation Treasurer
of Springboro. in 1890 he was elected Land Appraiser of Clearcreek Township
and re-elected in 1900 without opposition, serving with general satisfaction.
In 1901 he was elected Treasurer of Warren County, taking charge of the
office in September, 1902. He was re-elected without opposition, in 1903.
Experience has proven him to be a safe and careful business man, as well
as always courteous and genial. He is a member of a number of the secret
orders and of the G. A. R. Mr. Wheaton cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln,
while a soldier, and has always since been an active supporter of the Republican
Party." |
