Henry Probasco
DIED—On the American River, in California, on the 31st of October, 1850, Mr. Henry PROBASCO, youngest son of the Rev. John PROBASCO, of Lebanon. Henry Probasco was born and educated in Lebanon, where he was known and loved by a large circle of devoted friends. Perhaps no young man has grown up here whose noble impulses and warm affections more endeared him to those who knew him. Of an adventurous and daring spirit, he was led in the spring of 1849, just as he attained manhood, to join three of his associates in a journey to California. They accomplished their purpose, and reached that distant land by the toilsome and dangerous overland route. Not many weeks after their arrival, they were called to watch over one of their number in sickness, to see him die, and to perform the sad rites of his burial in a land of strangers. But, alas! in one fleeting year, he was summoned to yield his spirit to the God who gave it. He had been in delicate health during the summer, and on the morning of the 31st October, was seized by that dread scourge, the cholera, and died in a few hours. Thus has passed from earth to a purer world on high, we hope, a young man of high promise, generous in his feelings, and noble in his aims; a youth of unblemished moral character, who enjoyed the esteem and respect of all who knew him. Of him, we think we may say in the language of our Savior, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Wm. C. Hays
On Sunday last, at his residence near Ridgeville, in this county, after a brief illness, Mr. Wm. C. Hays, in the 49th year of his age. The deceased was for many years an exemplary christian, and, as the head of a family, a good neighbor and citizen, distinguished for his upright life and exemplary deportment. He died in full possission of his faculties, and in hope of a blissful immortality.
