Abner Smith (1754-1818)

OBITUARY.
DIED - On Thursday last, Mr. Abner Smith, of this town, in the 64th year of his age, after an illness of four weeks.
At the age of 24 he made a profession of religion, and attached himself to the Presbyterian Church, in which he acted as an officer the greatest part of his life. He adorned that profession by a steady exhibition of the christian character, to the day of his death. His illness originated from an inflamation in his left foot, which affected his whole system, and which was sustained with humble resignation to the divine will. He has left a wife and nine children to deplore his loss; but to them he has left this consolation, that he has gone where there shall "be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain."

Catharine (James) Smith

CATHARINE SMITH
Rests
From Life’s Labors

Friends met at the home at ten o’clock Sunday last and followed the remains of Catharine Smith to the Middle Run Baptist church where services were conducted by Elder J.C. Reed, of Blanchester, pastor of the church, who read the memoir published below, and preached an able and comforting discourse from the words of the scripture recorded in 1st, Corinthians, 15th, chapter and 51st, verse; “Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed.”

MEMOIR

Catherine James Smith was born March 9th, 1816, and died at her home in Greene county, O., January 14, 1898, aged 81 years, 10 months and 5 days.

She was married to Jackson Smith, Nov. 29th, 1838.

This union was blessed with 7 children six sons and one daughter named as follows: Jonathan, John, Frank, Anjalina, Nathan, Newton and James B.; all of whom are living except the daughter, Anjalina who died in 1872.

The descendants of the family who mourn on account of the departure of the deceased, are the above named sons, seventeen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

The subject of this memoir united with the Baptist church at Middle Run, June 17th, 1866, and continued a faithful, consistent member of the church, attending the services of the same as long as her health permitted.

She had been in declining health for several years and during the last six weeks was confined to her room and bed nearly all the time, gradually growing weaker until the end came.

She realized that she had lived her allotted time, and said to friends and loved ones who kindly cared for her in her last illness, that she was resigned and willing to go. She died peacefully, and with the assurance of saving faith in our blessed Savior.

As we are assembled together to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased, we realize that in her death Society has lost a kind and true friend, the church a faithful and honored member, and the family a devoted and loving mother.

Jane Smith

On Thursday of last week when the Little Miami was at its highest stage, Jefferson Smith a young man about 18 years of age, in company with his sister Miss Jane Smith aged 17, Mrs. Bell Casperson a young widow, ventured to cross the river in an old skiff.  On their return when just above the covered bridge near Corwin in a very rapid current, one ore [sic] broke leaving them entirely helpless.  Jonathan Philips and Alfred Leak were not far off and hastened to their rescue.  But unfortunately the bridge was near and being impossible to go under it safely the young man left the boat, clung to the bridge and got out.  His companions shared a worse fate; they were carried under the bridge and before aid could reach them were drowned.  Their bodies were found the next morning, and on Saturday were laid to rest side by side in the same grave on the hill.
