Howard Douglas Ratliff (1924-1945)

Mrs. Bessie Ratliff of North Mechanic Street received word from the War Department Saturday that her son, Pfc. H. Douglas Ratliff was killed in action in the Okinawa campaign on June 21. He was a member of the U. S. Marine Corps. Pfc. Ratliff, while on leave several months ago, was married to Miss Mary Polke of Philadelphia, Penna. in a double wing ceremony at St. Peter’s Church in that city on January 23. At the time, Pfc. Ratliff was stationed at Camp LeJeune, N. C. awaiting transfer to the West Coast. He had been in several campaigns in the South Pacific at that time and was home on leave. Besides his wife and mother he leaves five brothers, Pvt. William C. Ratliff of Ft. Knox, Ky, now home on furlough, Edward, Dale, Gerald and Leo all at home; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Poppe, Lebanon and Mrs. Ruth Adams, Kings Mills and his grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Hardwick of Clarksville.

RATLIFF SERVICES SET FOR SATURDAY.
PFC H. DOUGLAS RATLIFF

. . . Killed on Okinawa in ‘45
The body of Pfc. H. Douglas Ratliff, 19, who was killed in action on Okinawa June 21, 1945 while serving with the 6th Marine Division, arrived at the Vale Funeral Home in Morrow Tuesday. Pfc. Ratliff entered the armed forces while attending Lebanon High School in 1942.
Services will be held Saturday at 9 a. m. at St. Malachy Church in Morrow in charge of the Rev. Father Richard Kennedy. Military rites will be held at the grave in Morrow cemetery in charge of Morrow Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Bessie Ratliff, Lebanon; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Poppe, Lebanon; Mrs. Ruth Adams, Kings Mills; five brothers, Edward, Dale, Jerry, Leo and Billy of Lebanon.
