ANOTHER SHAKER GONE.
Once more we bow in humble submission to the inscrutable ways of the Supreme Architect of the universe, who in his wisdom has removed from earth our Brother Lorenz Oeschger who passed away on the evening of the 26th inst. Mourned by his associates and with every allowance for the frailties of human nature we can say his life of some 40 years as a member of the Shaker community has been one of unselfish usefulness and doubtless the triumphant welcome has been accorded him. “Well done good and faithful servant.”
Friends gathered with the fast diminishing family in the assembly room to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased on the afternoon of the 28th inst.
Rev. Dr. Gowdy spoke at some length of the happiness of those who realize that great truth, “I know my Redeemer liveth.”
The services was interspersed with some beautiful selections of sacred hymns and the cloth covered casket bore a handsome floral spray from his brethren and sisters.
The burial was at the beautiful Lebanon cemetery and as the last word of prayer had been spoken, all that was mortal of our brother was committed to mother earth, who has never proved unfriendly to man, but is ever kind and indulgent to his wishes, though constantly harassed. More to furnish the luxuries than the necessaries of life, she never refused her accustom yield and spreads his path with flowers, and his table with plenty, though producing pain. She supplies the antidote and returns with interest every good committed to her care, and at last when called upon to pass through the dark valley of the shadow of death she once more reverently and piously cover our remains with in her bosom, thus admonishing us that from it we came and to it we must shortly return. – M.
