Patrick Henry Maley (1841-1936)

LAST ROLL CALL
Answered by Patrick Maley.
Sole Resident Survivor of the Civil War
Marches Into Shadows of the Eternal Camping Ground

Franklin paused last Tuesday morning to pay tribute to Patrick Maley, its last resident survivor of John Kell Post, G. A. R. Fifty years ago John Kell Post, Grand Army of the Republic, was a vital factor in the affairs of Franklin. Strong men at the head of families marched under its flag and were active in the business and civic affairs of the community. For several years Patrick Maley was the sole survivor of the Post living in Franklin. The only other remaining member is John Winters, who now makes his home in Florida.

Early last Sunday morning [6 Sep 1936] death came to Mr. Maley at the home of Mrs. E. C. Hamilton, where he had resided for the past four years. Slowly yielding to the inevitable infirmities of advanced age, having reached his 95th birthday a little over a month ago, Mr. Maley answered the call and passed peacefully away. He had been up and dressed until a few days before his death.

Born in Ireland, July 25, 1841, Patrick Maley came to America with his father when a lad of 11 years. He was less than 20 years of age when he enlisted in the Union Army at Xenia, Ohio. He was a member of Colonel Fifer's regiment [sic? - perhaps meant to be Col. J. Warren Keifer, commander of the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry] and served during the entire four years of the Civil War.

He came to Franklin more than 30 years ago and was engaged in the laundry business until five years ago, when he retired. For 20 years he was associated with C. C. Black, dry cleaner.

His first wife was Kate Booth of Middletown, who died a few years after their marriage. Later he married Katherine Gallagher Miller of Franklin. During the last four years he made his home with Mrs. E. C. Hamilton, who gave him tender care and was as devoted as a daughter. She made his closing days comfortable and happy.

Three nieces, Mrs. Katherine Fleming of Dayton, Mrs. Sarah Wilson and Mrs. Celia McCall of California survive.

Holy Name Society of St. Mary church, of which he was a member, conducted services at the Hamilton residence on Monday evening. Russell McElfresh Post, American Legion, also conducted services on the same evening and Ex-Servicemen acted as pall bearers at the funeral held from St. Mary church at 8:30 a. m. Tuesday, Rev. Father Schneider officiating.

Patrick Maley was a highly respected citizen of Franklin. He was recognized as a real gentleman and esteemed by all who knew him. He was outstanding as a man of clean habits and was always immaculate in his dress and personal appearance. With Patrick Maley goes the last G. A. R. uniform worn by a resident of Franklin.

Burial was made in Woodhill cemetery under the direction of C. W. Unglesby, funeral director.
