John A. Koogle (1837-1862)

DEATH OF A SOLDIER.

Mr. John Koogle, son of William Koogle, of this place, died on Monday night last at the residence of his father, from a wound received in the battle of Pittsburg Landing. Mr. Koogle was brought home on last Friday evening, and hopes were entertained of his recovery; but on Monday morning he became worse, and continued so until he died. Mr. Koogle was a member of the 12th Illinois regiment, having joined that regiment while residing at Paris, Illinois. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives, friends, and the Odd Fellows, and was buried with the honors of war.

May He who presides over the destinies of this great nation, and who rules in the armies of heaven as in those of earth, console the afflicted parents, relatives and friends; and may the sever affliction be tempered by the thought that he poured out his life-blood in defense of their country. He died bravely; and his name shall go down through the years to come, linked with all those who have thought it well to die for their country.

Henrietta (or Nettie) A. (Enyart) Koogle (1844-1915)

MRS. CHARLES S. KOOGLE

Mrs. Charles S. Koogle passed away at her home in Lebanon, Ohio, Wednesday, July 7th, at 2:40 o’clock. She was born January 29, 1844, near Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin and Margaret Enyart. In 1862 she came to Lebanon to attend the National Normal University. Here she met Mr. Koogle, who married her two years later at her country home. They came immediately to Lebanon, where they have resided for over fifty years.

To them were born eight children; six of whom survive: Carrie, Effie, Emma, Roger, Anna and Florence. The last twenty years of her life were marked with intense suffering, but she was never known to complain. Her gentle, sweet spirit, her loving kindness, her untiring devotion to her husband and children, her wonderful cheerfulness, her beautiful character, will be a sweet benediction to all who knew her.

She was a loyal member of the Methodist Episcopal church from childhood, always a faithful attendant when her health permitted.

The funeral services were held at the home on East Main street, Friday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Asa I. Kestle.
