Josiah Holbrook (1844-1921)
"Death Came Peacefully Last Thursday, December 15th.", obituary, The Western Star (Lebanon, Ohio), 1921 contributed by Arne H Trelvik on 11 June 2005

It. was with profound sorrow that the sad news of the death of Josiah Holbrook reached the people of Lebanon on last Thursday, December 15th. His passing came at his home on Sycamore street and his spirit

passed into the great beyond as peacefully as had been his life. It was thus he had wished it.

Mr. Holbrook had been in poor health for a number of years. About eleven years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he only partially recovered. Some two weeks prior to his death his health failed rapidly and he was taken to his bed. Death was due to general debility.

Josiah Holbrook was born January 28, 1844, at Berea, Ohio. He was the oldest of six children born to Alfred and Melissa Holbrook. His father with his family moved to Lebanon in 1855, and the greater part of his subsequent life was spent in this town as teacher and business manager in his father’s school. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in Co. F., 12th Reg., O. V. I., serving for more than three years with the Union forces during the Civil War. He participated in the battles of Scarey Creek, Carnifax Ferry, Bull Run Bridge, Frederick, South Mountain, Antietam, Fayette C. H., Lewisburg, Cloyd Mountain, Lexington and Lynchburg. He always had a great affection and respect for his soldier comrades.

After returning from the war he attended his father’s school and then went to Montgomery, Alabama, where as Superintendent, he reorganized the public school system. He remained in Montgomery for three years.

In 1876 he married Laura A. Mason to which union two children were born, Irene Hebe and Alfred. His son died in 1906.

His wife and daughter and one sister, Anne Lucy, survive him. In 1893 he moved to Knoxville, Tenn., where he built and founded Holbrook Normal College. This building was afterwards destroyed by fire. Se [sic] suffered his first paralytic stroke in 1911, before becoming Recorder of Warren County in which capacity he served for eight years. He suffered several other strokes and his health gradually failed until 11 A. M., December 15, 1921, when his spirit gently passed to “that undiscovered country, from whose bourn no traveler returns.”

The funeral services were held at the family residence on last Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock conducted by Rev. Clerke, his comrades of the G.A.R. being in attendance. Interment was made in the Lebanon cemetery.
