Marion E. Greathouse (1840-1923)

Marion Esborne Greathouse was the fourth son of Jesse and Mary (Ross) Greathouse. He was born February 2, 1840, in Highland county, Ohio, born again “of water and spirit” in the year of 1872, and born triumphantly into eternal life March 18, 1923. He was 83 years, 1 month and 16 days of age when the final summons came to him.

In 1866 Mr. Greathouse was married to Elizabeth Williams, who preceded him into the Great Beyond seven years ago. For forty years their home was the home of the ministers of the Christian church, as they had accepted the gospel as preached by the Reformers who had been led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone.

When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Greathouse became a private in the 79th O. V. I. and served nearly three years.

It was as an honest workman at his humble trade, and as an ardent and faithful Christian that we shall remember him most. He was generous in giving to the support of the church, and generous in his tolerance of religious opinions other than his own. When there was no church of his choice where he lived, he did not hesitate to join earnestly with others in work and worship. He was one of the founders of the Lebanon Church of Christ and served as one of its elders for many years.

In our farewell to him here we can lay him in the City of the Departed conscious of God’s promise that,
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”

His obsequies were held Tuesday afternoon under the ministry of Dr. E. C. McDougle of Richmond, Ky., who labored with the deceased many years ago in establishing and building up the Lebanon Church of Christ, and his body was buried upon his family lot in the Lebanon Cemetery.
