Belle Casperson

On Thursday of last week when the Little Miami was at its highest stage, Jefferson Smith a young man about 18 years of age, in company with his sister Miss Jane Smith aged 17, Mrs. Bell Casperson a young widow, ventured to cross the river in an old skiff.  On their return when just above the covered bridge near Corwin in a very rapid current, one ore [sic] broke leaving them entirely helpless.  Jonathan Philips and Alfred Leak were not far off and hastened to their rescue.  But unfortunately the bridge was near and being impossible to go under it safely the young man left the boat, clung to the bridge and got out.  His companions shared a worse fate; they were carried under the bridge and before aid could reach them were drowned.  Their bodies were found the next morning, and on Saturday were laid to rest side by side in the same grave on the hill.
