Moses Leroy Atkinson (1899-1913)

"Moses Leroy Atkinson", The Western Star, Lebanon, Ohio, Thursday July 31, 1913

"Moses Leroy Atkinson was born near Oregonia, Ohio, October 3, 1878, and died on board the Army Transport "Merritt" off the coast of the Island of Luzen, near Legaspi, April 20, 1913, from ruptured aneurism of the aorta, aged 34 years, six months and 17 days.
"His early life was passed in this county excepting one year which was spent in New Jersey. He was of a generous affectionate nature and won and retained friends where ever he went. In his home life he was faithful to the trust reposed in him, brightening the home by his cheery manner.
Early in the year 1899 he enlisted in company "I" 16th Regiment, United States Army, and was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Soon after entering the army he went with his regiment to the Philippine Islands, returning home in February 1902. He remained at home until the summer of 1903 when he again entered the army, being assigned to the same regiment and company he had previously served in.  He was with his regiment at Ft. McPherson, Ga., for several months when the 16th Regiment was again sent to the Philippines. Returning to the United States they were stationed at Ft. Crooks, Nebraska, where his enlistment expired in February 1907. After spending a few days at  home he enlisted in Company "M" 17th Regiment, being at Ft. McPherson, Ga., for nearly three years, going from there to Ft. Sam Huston, Texas, with the Second Division of the Army. His time of enlistment expired here, and desiring to continue in the service he was transferred from the 17th to company "I" 13th Regiment, with the rank of Corporal. In October 1911 he returned with his regiment to the Philippines where his Major wrote in communicating his death to his mother, "He died in the line of duty."
"On April 16, he was detailed a police sergeant of the Army Transport "Merritt" where four days later his life work ended.
His mother and family greatly appreciate the Nation's kindness in having their loved one brought the long distance home, and his captain's statement to his mother that "Your son was held in the highest esteem by every member of his company and through his death is lost the services of one of the best soldiers in it."
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. J. Kestle at the chapel on Saturday morning July 26th."

Thomas J. Atkinson (c1838-1884)

Death of Capt. Thos. J. Atkinson

Capt. Thos. J. Atkinson, youngest brother of Mrs. Judge Wilson, died at his home near Little Rock, Arkansas, on the 17th inst. He was born in this county, and spent his boyhood in Lebanon where he joined Capt. Williams' company in the 12th Regiment, at the commencement of the war. He honorably performed his part in all the eventful campaigns in which his regiment mad it enviable reputation, rising from the ranks to a Captaincy, and at the close of the war sought his fortune in Arkansas, where he resided until his death. His disease was pneumonia, the crisis of which his friends hoped, from quite recent advices, he had safely passed, but assuming the typhoid form it speedily carried him away. Lucy, his daughter by his first marriage, since the death of her mother, has made her home with Judge Wilson, in Lebanon, and he leaves surviving him, a widow and two infant children residing in Arkansas. They have the sympathy of his many friends and expecially of his army comrades, whose memory of his manliness and warm hearted good nature his long absence from among us has not effaced.
